Well a few of my friends from the corvette forum decided to go to the track today and I tagged along. Instead of just watching I figured it would be more fun to run the Catera. It was a TT day and almost everything there was faster then 13's so i just thought to my self as long as I go faster then 16.5 I’ll be happy! Well I had a great day!!! Keep in mind I have done NO modifications to the drive train other then the rims. I cooled down the car between runs, temp gauge was usually around 1/4 way up. I removed the spare tire and jack and basically anything I could remove without tools from the passengers compartment. did a burnout before every run (mainly for fun), preloaded the car at the lights (just over 1000rpm nothing drastic). During the run all electrical accessories were turned off. The weather: between 48 and 55 deg. 55% humidity The second best run (comp didn't print all the data on the best run): R/T - 0.194 60' - 2.294 330 - 6.640 1/8 - 10.179 MPH - 70.32 1000 - 13.225 1/4 - 15.835 MPH - 86.13
Not in this order here is what I ran all day long: 15.830@86.6, 15.835, 15.868, 15.880, 15.900, 15.926, 15.938, 15.960, 15.980, 16.008, 16.015, 16.049, 16.055 and finally 17flat huge wheel spin off the line, this should have been the best run because the car was stone cold but the guy that went before me left some fluid on the sweet spot.
Nice run what mods you have done? car suposed to run a 16.5 and i got a 16.4 out of a 98 with 113,000 miles id love to get down to 15's like you do anything special? tips tricks? lol my best run was when the car was pretty cool id like to run in weather like yours was always runs better in cold
My slip reads reaction .8
1/8 mile 10.7@69 and finally 16.4@85mph i ran no tc with no spare tire my car is basically stock cept cold air filter and resonators removed i launched at about 2,000 rpms or so
Last time i went with a few friends from the gto forum my dad is on corvette forum and i ran his c5 few weeks back and could not get traction so i had to leave t/c on and it slowed car down few times and still ran in the 13's LOVE THE LS1
This is all I’ve done to the car: http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/1262918-post33.html I can’t even remember the last time I changed the air filter! Car has 147000 km on her. I do regular oil changes, until this last oil change I was using Mobil 1 but this time I got a great deal for Pennzoil platinum synthetic. Tricks: Shift the car manually past the red line but don’t hit the reve limiter. I think I listed all the other tricks above, oh I had slightly more then ¼ tank of gas (ultra 94).
The front Steinmetz wheels are slightly lighter, wheel and tire weigh 2 lbs less. Unfortunately I did not weigh the rear wheels but I suspect they’ll be heavier so basically no gain. I don’t know if it’s because the age of the tire (1999) or if these continental tires are just really hard compound. My 17s with BFG’s are like chewing gum compared to these. So traction has actually diminished with my new wheels. Cornering has improved because the rims stick further out and there is less sidewall flex, but that doesn’t help me in a drag race lol ET calculators can give you a rough idea but it’s different when it comes time to run down the track, it’s difficult to reproduce those # especially since so few factors are taken into consideration. Road and track 97 catera: 16.9 Car and driver 2000 catera sport: 16.5
ive seen numerous places that catera runs a 16.5 in the standing 1/4 mile even in the factory sales brochure i picked up for a 97
shift the car manually as in start out in 1 then shift lever to 2 and and finally 3 does yours shift right away? ive done that on road before and i change lever but it takes a sec to shift over
when im in sport mode my car runs in the red and shifts at 6,800 rpm i need more low end power shes a 98 with 113,000 miles on her maybe a lil tired but she still runs great and i beat 16.5 with a 98 with 113,000 miles so im overall pretty happy
Yup start off in first and so on. Yes there is some lag but after you do it often enough you figure out at what RPM you need to shift at. Sounds like your tach is overzealous, on your car what RPM does it show when the rev limiter kicks in?
I bet under the right conditions you can knock off as much as 0.5 off your time... and I also bet if you run on a very hot day you might even hit 17s...
I see that on the dyno numbers all the time... I talked to the guys from the tuning shop and they said that when they got their dyno they sent all the people to another dyno to veryfiy the restults and they got solid 8% difference between the dynopack and the dynojet BTW the dynojet and the mustang dyno were practically the same so the guy assured me that if I were to take my car to one of the other kinds of dynos i can see about 196hp at the wheels... and a difference of 10degrees can mean about 1 hp so Imagine if you run on a hot day vs a winter day you can easily loose 5-6 hp right there... so that would make a small difference at the track...
Congrats on the better time Peetyz. What was the temperature?
MV6 A dyno is a great tool for tuning or seeing how much power certain modifications have contributed but to see how a car really performs it’s more beneficial and fun to go to the track. I was under the impression that the Dynapack dyno results were higher in HP because the removal of the wheels is over 100lbs the engine doesn’t have to spin, also you don’t have the frictional losses that a drum dyno has (tire to drum friction). With the modifications you have done to your car I’d be interested to see how well it performs at the track.
If anyone else has been to the track feel free to post your times in this thread, I’m interested to see your results faster or slower it’s all good.
Here is a vid of my cat running my friends ZR1 corvette. this was one of the 15.8 passes
it was around 50 and i burned out at the line a lil so lost a few tenths i bet id be around 15.9 or 16 flat with super cool engine and lots of traction (I bet your rims and tires help you huh?)
My dad has a c5 and ive raced it and raced him its embarassing when i race him in the catera lol he just pulls away I drove the vette a few weeks back and enjoyed beating lots of rice in it ha ha
That vid I posted is a little deceiving, I had a good reaction time and my friend was just spinning through first gear so I was ahead until the 60’ and then he just pull away. Here is a vid of that run from a different angle (second pass) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvihqAxdx-0
