I also have a long list of issues with my 97 catera, and have already fixed a few things, along with my grandmother who owned it before me....
it only has 68k miles on it!
If these is THAT many problems, why dont they have some kind of program in place so we're not all getting screwed?
I've had it since May, and I have to try and get thru winter and see if I can get rid of it somehow next spring...I just cant do it till then....
IMO, ANY car with only 68k miles should be reliable, or its a lemon!

Admittedly, they probably should have back when they were new and all these problems popped up. But now, when you get a used car and all you have to do is a little research on the internet to find out it's a dud befoe you get it, whose fault is that really? I have a 97, and I feel your pain, but I CHOSE to buy it, and I wish I hadn't. We have to take some responsibility. No one made me get it. |

The catera's apparent lack of total quality does not mean all cadillac's are not good cars the new cadillac's get very high consumer reports. But i have a 98 and really enjoy it and yes it has had its problems but yours sounds like a lemon to me check with lemon laws and see what you can do just be glad you didnt pay 33,000 plus for it sorry about your problems its very frustrating i know |

Same as PEETYZ here, my 98 Cat, even after 167 000km is still going strong... had some issues over the last 8 years but nothing really out of the ordinary compared to other cars I've owned... |

Also many of them are typical maintenece things that appear on most cars once they get above 50,000 miles |

The problems in my opinion, were in the conversion of an excellent European auto, to an American model. I have not found any part of my auto that is not top notch. I have had problems anytime I have had anyone but Cadillac work on it, and even had problems when the "Catera Specialist" at my dealer did not work on it. I now specifiy that only he is to work on it, and I maintain it with care, and it now causes me little trouble. |

My take on the internet idea, let's face it you can find good and bad on any car. People like us including me, look and post because we are internet savvy. Most of us owning a caddy are more likely to post good or bad. If this was a vette club we be having the same discussion's about vette's. The catera had some problems but all in all it is a can be a good car. Some had alot of problems and well knock on wood hopefully I won't, and some had small issues. I agree the cars are old and not much can be done now. If you want a car any American car then expect issue's no matter the make or model. I heard nothing but good about a Taurus, yet none of us own one, nor would I. We bought a caddy because of the name. The catera being made in Germany reminds me of the Volkswagen engine the way it drives. However the plush and relative smooth and relaxing ride is that of of an American car, hence Cadillac. I have owned a Honda, 3 Nissan's, Saturn, Mustang 65, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Ford, dodge, and now a Mazda Van as well. Of all I thought the Crx I owned was Awesome, however when I had trouble and I did it cost. The Pontiac sunbird let's not even bring that up, the ford as all fords was stiff. The Saturn while nice burned oil and I totaled it, but it burned oil and the dealer said that was normal for a new Saturn (ok right). the Olds Intrigue was very nice, drove like a Caddy, sporty and plush, however nothing but problems from day one and got rid of it within two years. the nissan's were my best experience mechanically, never had any major problems. I had a 91 sentra, 97 pathfinder, and a 2003 frontier. All were awesome. My catera is probably my all time favorite until I can afford me a CTS. While I know some have had there share of problems, it is simply one of the funnest cars I have ever driven, sporty, nice rims, plush, quick but not fast, awesome stereo, sunroof, and nice looking and it says Cadilac on the CAR. So don't think there are not some forums that down play most American made cars. Most people who are happy are not looking for a fix on the internet or looking for dash kits, spoilers, air intakes and any other cool stuff provided on this forum from our members. So I ask you not to down the Catera! It evolved the CTS, which we all know is a good car. But it's track record won't eclipse a camry. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
