There doesn't appear to be water in the crank case only oil in my coolant (brown and gooey)how can I know if it is the head gasket or could it be the oil cooler? What's the best way to diagnose it? I need help

Re: 97 Catera oil in coolant
The concensus here is that head gasket failures are rare. You're probably experiencing an oil cooler leak. If there's no "mayo" on the dipstick but goo in the coolant tank there's a new oil cooler in your future.
yah ur problem is the head gasket blew in my catera at 205km got the head gasket done the car was running great till the other day 222km now and i think i threw a rod or something the car is at the machaninc now he is checkin to see wat up i should know by later tomrow ....all i know when i poped the hood there was oil everywhere
If the cooling system is filing with oil, it is very likely that the oil cooler has failed.
At this point you'll need to replace the cooler, replace all the cooling system hoses, and flush the holey moley out of the thing.
That's what I've gathered here. I don't see oil anywhere, nothing on the driveway nothing on the engine....it's clean as can be.There's just this brownish sludge in my coolant tank and it overheats. The guys at the dealership where ready to throw in a new engine and weren't willing to do much less. Glad for the internet.
