Rattle when starting engine, only when warm

I have a 2009 BLS Wagon. I am getting a worryingly noisy rattle when I start my BLS, but only when it is warm. It is difficult to describe but it is a sort of shudder rattle. Sometimes if you chicken out and stop the starter it won't start, you have to 'go for it' and then the engine starts ok. No other problems I know of.

When the engine is cold it doesn't seem to be a problem at all. I would be grateful if anyone has any ideas on what could be wrong. I don't want to be damaging the car by not getting it looked at but as we are now out of warranty.........

I found this and it seems to be similar problem - http://www.saabscene.com/forum/threa...-Noise-on-warm...

Hi and welcome to this very quiet but hopefully, friendly forum!

To be honest, there aren't many of us BLS owners, so trying to diagnose certain issues is going to be difficult.

For starters, it would be useful to know what part of the world you are in? I'm assuming the UK? Also, what mileage has your car done? My saloon BLS is also a 2009 model, but built in May 2008 with only 28,000 miles on the odometer. What engine is in the car? 1.9 TTID or 1.9 TID 150 BHP? Auto or manual?

As you are probably aware by now and seeing as you have already taken the time to scan the Saabscene website, your most useful knowledge base is going to be gleaned from Saab owners or independent dealers. Don't forget too, for mechanical issues you could seek advice from Vauxhall dealerships as the 1.9 engine is the same as the Vectra CDTI. My local Vauxhall garage has already told me they will be more than happy to change the cambelt and waterpump when the time comes for exactly the same price as they would charge for the Vectra, similarly, my local Alfa Romeo specialist has said the same thing and both quoted the same price.

There are as you are undoubtedly aware, just a small handful of authorised Cadillac service centres in the UK. I use Evans Halshaw at Wavendon in Milton Keynes, usually around £200 for an annual service and you'll get Tech 2 diagnosis as part of the deal. If you haven't 'treated' your car to an official Cadillac service, I can only recommend that you do, you'll get any software updates that need applying and if they find anything, they'll tell you.

If you do find that you have an issue with the DMF and it subsequently requires replacement, well as you are aware, it isn't exactly a cheap job. I believe the front subframe has to be dropped and it is a days' work. Please see the following links, they could be useful if/when the time comes:

I'm assuming also that you are aware of the issues concerning the EGR valve? To be honest, it is a basic owner serviceable item with only minimal tools and common sense required. I replaced my own and refurbed my original to keep as a hot spare. If you do change it, I recommend using the revised Fiat EGR gasket.

I hope you get the issues sorted. I don't care what anyone says, these cars are great when they are looked after and ownership should be as easy as owning any 9-3 or Vectra, certainly, they can be just as cheap if you use Vauxhall branded parts!

I just renewed the insurance on my BLS within the last couple of days, £242, yup two hundred and forty two quid for fully comp with class one business use. I can't complain at that!

    Hi, just read your post.

I had to have the clutch changed on my 150 Wagon at about 20,000 miles. The noise that you describe appeared after this. The dealer Phoenix of Wimbledon assured me that this noise was nothing to be concerned about and can be a normal characteristic.

To reassure you I can advise you that my car has now done 103,000 miles and I have had no problems whatsoever, just driven to Czech Republic and back, drove like a still new car at 100mph plus on autobahns in Germany.

On a general note I have my car serviced by my local garage who have had no problems in obtaining any parts, indeed Phoenix told me that front shock absorbers that I needed had to come in from USA (?) at some ridiculous price and with a 2 month delivery. My local garage fitted them within 1 week locally sourced.

I have had a windscreen replaced (stone damage), replaced by Autoglass (spec is identical to Saab 93 Wagon).

Had a geometry adjustment at Kwik Fit when 2 rears changed. Thought it was all b******t but the car now handles and performs much more crisply, it is really noticeable.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Rattle when starting engine, only when warm

Thanks for the responses. It is a UK 2009 diesel, i think 150 bhp and manual. 42,000 on the clock as we speak.
Interestingly I also just had the clutch changed by a Saab dealer in Reading at the same time as another part under warranty (Whitequay). So I wonder if that is it?
In fact the only other complaints are the rattle in the ceiling that over 2 services the garages convinced me was just a door nut that need tightening and has never gone away. Oh yes and the cushion on the centre arm rest has come off, struggling to work that one out.
Anyway I am fond of my BLS and we plan to run it into the ground, I am not sure it is worth much second hand anymore. I have NEVER seen another Wagon on the road at the same time so I look fwd to honking at you when I see one.
    Thanks again
