"Battery not charging - Make a safe stop! " warning message

Managed a few trouble free months since last fault/problem with my BLS, then last week 'bong', "BATTERY NOT CHARGING - MAKE A SAFE STOP'' message and red battery warning lamp on.
After a couple of days of swapping the battery (after about 30 minutes of driving the ABS drops off, then stability control followed by traction control, each with a warning and a 'bong', then power steering dies), finally found an independant SAAB specialist near to where I was working away who supplied and fitted an alternator (£337) but even equipped with Tech 2 was unable to reset warning. It still goes off a few minutes into every trip.
At the weekend it had another snapped coil spring replaced for MOT (same as last year, fracture on both springs is identical)
Today I find I have a nasty rattle when clutch pedal is depressed. The things got me depressed! Unlike my previous, an Alfa 166, I can't say the BLS has been a great car. Sad to report that my Cadillac days may be coming to an end.

    Chrise

Bad luck. Had the same problem with failed alternator which was replaced at my local garage for £360. No Tech2 at this garage but the warning light went away as soon as it was replaced. So you may have another problem. (Tried to get home but it does get a bit scary when you lose abs and power steering for the last quarter mile - not recommended)

Ordered them from Western SAAB but Cadillac wouldn't send them out to a non-Cadillac dealer so had to reordered from Whitequay and they forwarded them on to my garage for me. It was a real hassle at the time to sort out because Cadillac were cancelling Western SAABs order without telling them, and then the price doubled from SAAB price yet they are same item from same place. I later found I could have had a Hirsch sport set of 4 fitted at SAAB dealer for little more than purchase price for a Cadillac pair!
I'd recommend finding a SAAB as near your model as possible and ordering from its VIN, save a fortune!

Just one more thing gone wrong since last post; I now have to clear STABILITY CONTROL NOT WORKING as well as SERVICE DUE and BATTERY NOT CHARGING...every trip, and apparently the clutch noise is my flywheel - another common Cadillac/SAAB failing which SAAB rectify for free.

Look out for Black BLS diesel on eBay soon....

    Hello Chrise,

I have had EXACTLY the same problem. My sister picked me up from Gothenburg Airport (Sweden) one day in the fall of 2010 I think it was, and I took over. Suddenly the car says, but in swedish, the same message about the battery not being charged and that I should stop as soon as possible. So I did, turned the engine off and took the key out. I thought it was just another error message like those I've had before ("rain sensors not working", "ABS not working", "ASR not working" etc, fix = hook off battery supply for at least 10 minutes (reset the car), and voila). But, when I turned the ignition on and started the car there was no message about the battery, so I kept going towards home. The message came up I think 4 or 5 times more, did the same thing as first time until the trip computer started flickering with error messages about ABS, ASR, rain sensors and God knows what more, until the car just died on me. So I was stuck on a road with a car not starting, my sister and me don't know what to really do other than call the tow-truck. My service place got the car, the generator was a total write-off so that was changed and all was financed thanks to the insurance company

I also had the clutch noise you're talking about, thought first that it could be the clutch release bearing, I didn't give it much more thought until one day the ratteling when depressing and pressing the clutch was quite frankly embarrising. Took it to the service place, they said it was the flywheel having cracks in it and it needs to be replaced. Fortunetly I got that through insurance as well since the whole operation was a cost about 45 000 swedish kronor, approx. 4000-4500 euros. They acctually even replaced the clutch and a couple of other things, guess it was an extra bonus for me... The workshop said that it was a common problem on these cars. Had another problem when I recieved the car, the gear stick wouldn't "respring" back to its "middle-middle" position as it should, it just stuck in the tracks between gears. So, when I was shifting from first to second, no problem, but when I wanted to shift to third (next row so to say), I had to do an active push to the middle to get it between the tracks of third and fourth. Kind off enoying, took it back and got the comment: "This is also a common problem on these cars with the gear linkages". Called it total bullshit, said that this problem wasn't there when I left the car with the workshop, but was quite obviously a problem when I picked it up, so if this "common problem" would've appeared during that week had zero credability, chances are stupidily low. Got them to fix it for free, or if they just backlogged it to the insurance company for the flywheel, don't know. Since they have been at the linkages when pulling out the gearbox to replace the flywheel, it was their fault imo. I was so mad because they couldn't admit they did something wrong.

So, to my question, how did you get it rectified for free? Are you still under warranty? Because I'm not...

I haven't had it rectified, it still has the noisy clutch, battery light on, engine management light, "ding-dong" battery not charging...(but it is) etc all on for nearly a year now of using it 30+ miles daily. Hasn't failed or changed at all.
SAAB will only repair SAABs with same noisy clutch/damaged flywheel for free, even out of warranty. I'm 100+ miles from nearest Cadillac dealer and no warranty so I'd pay through the nose, possibly more than car's value so just gonna run it 'til it dies and buy something German probably.
