Inoperable PWR/VOL knob on 96 ETC with Bose

I just got my 96 Eldorado a few weeks back and I have a problem. I can't turn the stereo off or adjust the volume using the knob. I have to use the steering-wheel mounted volume controls. Supposedly, push the knob in to turn the radio OFF, and it stays in. Then, you push it again and it pops out and the radio comes ON. Mine won't stay in, and even if I hold it in, the radio continues playing. I pulled the radio knob off, and saw that the post it is mounted on is held in by a small hex nut. Can this switch/post be removed and replaced with the head unit still in the dash? Is this an easy fix? It is a Bose head unit, with cassette, with 12-disc changer, and it is non-THEFTLOCK. I've come close to madness trying to find one on Ebay, because they're all THEFTLOCKed, or non-Bose, or non-CD changer heads.
Thanks.
