Complete Radio Silence...

Remove this ad
Ok, so my radio is dead. It turns on fine, and the headunit seems to work fine, but I get absolutely NOTHING out of my speakers. No hum, no buzzing, nothing, just silence. I checked my fuses and everything looks good. I searched the forums and didn't really see anything too decisive on this, so figured I'd post.

Anyone have any idea WTF is wrong? When I get my car back from the shop I'm going to check the speaker wires in the trunk and see if I'm even getting any signal from the receiver...I dunno much about the setup though. It's the top-o-the-line Bose system for my model.

Re: Complete Radio Silence...

Dude didnt u just get your car back from getting stiffed and havin the engine blow lol. Sounds like ur cars got some issues. No biggie tho. in 96 the Seville differed from its counter part the Eldorado and instead of keeping 4 mini amps for each speaker, changed to one major amp mounted on the backside of the rear seat. If your stereo comes on fine then either the relay to tell the amp to turn on went or your amp went.

Re: Complete Radio Silence...

2 things to check first:
-connectors behind the stereo.
-connectors behind the amp.

Re: Complete Radio Silence...

The fuse for the amplifier is a 30 amp large fuse located in the box under the rear seat.

Re: Complete Radio Silence...

When you say in a box under the seat, do you mean actually UNDER the rear seat, so that I have to take out the bottom cushion? Or do you mean BEHIND the rear seat, in the trunk? This is a 97 STS by the way. I've checked every fuse in the car, under the hood and in the trunk, and they're all fine.

And yah CadillacETC1997...she's a gem in the rough...I bought the car real cheap knowing there was little stuff wrong with it (Granted, I didn't know the engine was going to blow up, but I got some of my money back for that), and I have no problem spending the money to put it back to, well, Cadillac shape. I wasn't concerned about the radio at all, cause I'm just going to put in an aftermarket system I have sitting in my bedroom from my previous car, but I was wondering if I could get this one working in the mean time.

Re: Complete Radio Silence...

puttin an aftermarket system is a bitch in these cuz of the bose. you have to rewire the whole car. just something to keep in mind for the future (i pulled the bose from my car)

Re: Complete Radio Silence...

Yah, so I've heard. I've done a bunch of other full aftermarket installs and figured them out decently. If I get the ambition, I may do it myself, but I'm thinkin right now I'm more then likely just going to drop it off at Tweeter, hand them my stuff, and tell them to do it. They'll probably bend me over for like 200, but hey, at least it'll be done right, and if it isn't, I'll have someone to go back on besides myself.

I'm going to go through and check all my connections tomorrow, see if I can find anything.

Re: Complete Radio Silence...

Alright, what is the proper way to remove the head unit from this car so I can get at the wires? I looked at it briefly, but I didn't want to go pulling and forcing stuff until I knew exactly what I was doing.

Also, this car has only one amp, correct? Which is mounted to the right of the fuse box in the trunk?

Re: Complete Radio Silence...

1st pull the shifter handel off via a horseshoe pin then simply pulling upward. then pry up the shift plate. then remove the info controls mounted above the radio by sticking a flat head behind it on either the left or right between the radio and info controls. then remove the ash tray via the 2 screws that were under the shift plate and the one screw behind the ash tray insert. finally remove the 2 screws behind the info center and the 2 inner screws that were covered by the ash tray insert and there you have it.

Re: Complete Radio Silence...

Sometimes just removing the amp fuse in the trunk and re inserting it will reboot the amp. i have to do this on a neighbors car once a year. radio will display but will not play, I leave the key on, radio on, remove the fuse say WTF and reinstall, viola! the radio works!

Re: Complete Radio Silence...

So. I left the car on, I turned the radio on, popped the trunk, went back and pulled the fuse, stood up and said "WTF", then put the fuse back in. Nothing.

I'm just going to say screw it, my aftermarket system is going in soon. I'll pull the stuff out, find out what's fried, then sell the rest on ebay...

Re: Complete Radio Silence...

Tweeter quoted me today...815 bucks to install my stuff + wires. That's retarded, so I told them they were f-ing crazy and I left. So looks like I'm going to have to do it myself. Putting in a deck, 4 speakers, 4 channel amp, 2 subs and a mono channel amp. And all the wiring inbetween. Anyone have any advice? And do I need any kind of special harness or do I just have to cut and splice?
