Keyless entry remotes non specific to vehicle?

I have a 2012 cadillac cts keyless entry remote and I was curious if I can program it to work on a 2006 cadillac cts???

I'm not sure about yours but some GM keyfobs are for certain generation remote systems. There is a number on the back of the FOB that is only compatible with certain year & models. For example when replacing the FOB on my '97 SS I had to search for one with a certain GM number on the back and any other number was not compatible.
