Need to know watts for factory speakers 94 concours Hi,
i have a 94 cadillac deville concours and the everything is original in it.. it has the active audio factory radio with cassette (no cd) and has 11 speakers if you would count the tweeters also.. wat happened is that one of my rear deck speakers (Which work as subwoofers just for bass) is farting, i checked and the paper around the rubber is ripped.. it works fine but just has that loud farting noise.. it is 4 ohm but wat i need to know is the watts that the speaker is working on.. these cars have built in amps.. im goin to change them with aftermarket either JBL or JL audio speakers but not so sure of the watts of the original AC delco speakers the size is 6x9. i asked the dealer for the original and they are $125 EACH.. not a pair but each... so HELP ME PLEASE and thank you

Re: Need to know watts for factory speakers 94 concours
If you install a pair of quality 6x9's the hyped "watts" makes absolutely NO difference.
Current advertising implies that a "400 watt" speaker is somehow better or louder than a "200 watt" speaker. That advertising is patently false; It's all gamesmanship.
Speakers die from being overdriven to distortion, which usually fries voice coils. If you're listening to LOUD music in a car audio system, each speaker is receiving something less than 5 - 10 watts RMS. If you overdrive a given speaker to the point that it rattles or the voice coil bottoms out, it's not wattage that's lacking: it's sonic output ability and that's dependent on size and construction.
Buy the best sonic quality 6x9's you can afford (Price does buy better sound) and don't sweat the hype.
(...........and, in your search for loudness, if you overdrive the new speakers, they'll blow too. Curiously a low powered amp will destroy speakers faster than a high powered one: The low powered amp cannot control the voice coil when driven to distortion.)
I build my own home stereo dynamic speakers and run huge tube amps. Go up to Photo Albums in the blue bar and find my album - the one with the Colt Peacemakers on red velvet. Speaker and amp pics there.

Re: Need to know watts for factory speakers 94 concours
The amplifier included in the factory sound system is not putting out that many watts RMS. My back right 6x9 speaker broke the same way...paper became ripped. Anyway, any aftermarket 6x9 speaker costing more than $60 for the pair will easily handle anything your factory amp can put out. I replaced my 6x9's with a pair (replace them as a pair even though only one broke) of Kicker KS690's. I got 3-way speakers because my system is modified so the midrange and tweeter now play the mids and highs but in your case, just the bass part would play and the bass still sounds great. A nice improvement over stock. You can save some $ by getting a 2-way version of the 6X9...no need to waste the money on a 3-way when they are only playing the low frequency's.
As previously stated, distortion will break your speaker before overpowering it would. Not much you can do to improve the amp unless you get an aftermarket amp...which is a whole big fun adventure you probably don't want to embark on. I have done it in my 97 Deville...it is a pain to integrate the amp into the stock system as well as run new speaker wires.

Re: Need to know watts for factory speakers 94 concours
Glad you are enjoying the sound system. Once you get the 2-way 6x9's you will enjoy an improvement in the bass. The kicker 2-way speakers I got were about $115-ish for the pair and the improvement in bass response was great. So I would look to spend around that much, Polk, JBL, Kicker, Infinity and maybe JL Audio (although JL Audio is probably more expensive) should offer a great sounding pair of 6x9's for around that price. I would stay away from Sony/Eclipse/Clarion brands....they don't strike me as a quality upgrade.
Another thing to consider would be a subwoofer. Use a "SNI-35" (google it) to tap into the 6x9's signal and put the sub+amp in the trunk. Add a wiring kit and you are good to go. BUT, get a "JL Audio CL-RLC" (google that too) and this will let you control the subwoofer independently from the driver seat. Once you upgrade the 6x9's you will enjoy the improved bass response and then you will get hooked (like I did) and want MORE POWER haha... Overhauling the whole audio system gets pricey and complicates things but it can be done (I am rocking out w/around 800 watts RMS of distortion free sound PLUS the car looks completely stock - dashboard and all)- especially with the help from more knowledgeable people on this forum. Good luck.
