    Amp hookup

Ok so I have a 2002 Seville SLS and several years ago I replaced my sound system. For about at least a year now I have been suffering from voltage drops that seem to want to stall out the engine, but it never does. I checked all the connections for my subwoofer amp and they all look fine. I am getting power to the amp through 4 gauge wire and I have it hooked to the fuse box terminal off of the battery. I think I would rather have it attached directly to the battery post. Which battery tap do i need

    Short?

    Or long?

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Amp hookup

I wouldn't use neither of them I the longer one and when I went to a cadillac mechanic he told me those are made of brass and the engine vibration and they enventually crack. The post should be made of steel. You have two options you can either maker some custom post out of washers and nuts and make sure you space your wires with washers. Or you can get a dual post battery and feed your amps on the the top post. F you can't make any custom. Battery post ill make them for you 5 bucks each free shipping . Email me and ill show you pics of mine or you can click on my screenname and under that I havew a link to my site.

    Re: Amp hookup

Well I ended up buying the short bolt. I just hope it is long enough. If not the long bolt is only a couple of dollars. If this doesn't get rid of my voltage issues I will have to replace the amp. It is a cheapie Profile amp for my subwoofer. Keeping my fingers crossed.

A voltge drop means you have a loose wire somewhere. Have the amp tested in someone elses car before you shell out some money on a new amp. I maybe possbile how you wired it the amp stays on when the car is off and that too can be why you have a voltage drop

All of the wiring was gone over and all is tight. the amp definitely turns off with the key. I am going to try and hook the power wire right off the battery to see if it improves. It is cheap enough to try. Plus i won't be going through the extra foot and a half or so of cable that runs to the fuse box. If this doesn't do it then i am going to buy a new amp. I paid like $80 or so for it so no big $ loss if it turns up not to be going bad. I disconnected the amp for a short period once and the voltage drops did not occur. Starting cheap and working my way more expensive. We shall see

    Re: Amp hookup

The remote wire runs from the head unit along the driver side rocker panel directly to the amp. I tried installing the cheap battery tap today. It installed to the battery nice and tight. Then I tried hooking the amp lead to the end of it. With 3 year old girl strength, the bolt snapped right off of the tap. So I reinstalled the stock bolt and am looking for a higher quality tap. Any suggestions?

    Re: Amp hookup

So the new battery post you got off ebay broke . Where in the battery or at the amps power wire. Post a pic or tell. The remote wire should be hooked up to the HU remote wire and the cars antenna so when the HU is off you know your amps . Another way to got with your post is to go custom or get a dual post battery. Stock on the side amps on the top. It would be easier that way autzone or kragen sells. The top post connector and has a nut and bolt where you can connect your amps power wire connector. If the hole is too small you might have to drill a bigger hole on it . Either take it off to make the wire or put the terminal in some vice grips and try to drill it straight. If you need anymore help write back

    Re: Amp hookup

It broke where the amp terminal would go. I do not have a power antenna (mine is in the glass) so the remote wire goes directly to the amp. Plus there is absolutely zero chance of buying a new battery. I just bought a new battery about a month ago. Plus my battery is under my rear seat so not just any battery can be installed. there is a special vent system to vent the hydrogen gases caused by charging so my car and myself does not explode. I will attempt to do a custom bolt install and see how it works

    Re: Amp hookup

What broke? Yea custom terminals can be made all you need is ethier a 3/8 bolt (I pefer blank 3/8 thread) and washers and nuts . Arrange in this order factory wire, nut then you amp wire. Then add another nut. Make sure your wires have enough space between them and use washers for space. Is you neg post factory or you have upgraded wire on it. As for the ring terminals on your power wire you might have to drill the holes bigger. Good luck.
