    Air Fltration System

Can someone explain what the purpose of the air filtration system in the ATS is supposed to do? Is it there just to keep dust out of the cabin? I'm driving around with the system set in auto mode. I happen to get behind a diesel truck, the diesel exhaust is in the car in seconds, drive by a dead skunk, in the car. Its as if the windows are open. I drive my wife's C300, the air is always much better, hardly any external odors get in the car. Is something broken or is it just like this?

Maybe the 300 has a carbon filter, it is set to recycle. I think keeping dust and allergens out is the main purpose. Use the recycle option to prevent more intake of the fumes and smells when they are noticed or expected.

The ATS just has a simple paper filter (I'm sure its not paper but you get the idea) and it's as stated above, dust allergens and bugs based on what I had in mine.

You breathe unfiltered air on your way to the car.

The HVAC system would take quite a bit of time to displace all of the unfiltered air in the cabin.

You have to get out of the car once you reach your destination.... More unfiltered air.

    Cabin filtration is a joke.

I wouldn't assemble silicon wafers in the car, but it does reduce the amount of pollen and dirt being blown through the vents. Its no different than having a standard airfilter on a home HVAC system.

It keeps bugs and leave particles from blowing out of the defroster, what’s not to like

I know what you mean for some reason in auto it wont let you hit the recycle button which keeps outside air out. What I do is hit the recycle button when I notice a bad smell outside. I also have a c300 sport and I get the same smell when I pass diesel trucks and bad smells. Might be your wife is running a better filter.

The only reason I replaced mine is because of the amount of gunk in the filter. I'd rather it be there than lining the ducts and fan blades.

There is a higher grade cabin filter in the ATS accessory catalog, maybe check into that. . ..I'm a huge fan of cabin filters I remember in my Passat on allergy high pollen days a drive in the car and I felt better...I think they work and I plan on upgrading to the better filter when I get my first oil change

I think the OP's concern is that while in the car he travels through places with a much, much higher concentration of pollutants than found in any other place he goes. For example, he does not have a big truck's diesel engine spewing smoke inside his garage, or within 20 feet of his car when parked in a parking lot. Also, I am sure he does not keep roadkill in his garage. Yet we all know what that can smell like when you pass near it on a road.

I tried running in recirculate mode for the last couple of days, its a little better but not that much. I'll check into the higher quality filter in the accessory catalog and see if that helps.
