    Locking fob inside of car

I was told by the dealership 10 days ago when I bought the car that it will not lock the doors with the fob inside. Is there a setting I missed that overrides that? Or did I misunderstand?

Luckily OnStar remotely unlocked the car but without that it would have been a helluva inconvenience. Needless to say, the fob stays in my pocket from now on.

I believe there is a setting - but the car is supposed to detect the fob and do a rapid "triple honk" when you shut the door getting out. I've noticed though if the fob is inside the cup holders at certain angles or inside the console it will not be detected.

If the spare fob is in the trunk though it'll get detected just fine.

Mine has never locked with the fob in the car and I leave it in there often with passive auto lock on. The only setting I know you can change is to turn off the honking when you leave the fob it in the car.

Battery issue, maybe? I bought a 13, so conceivably the batteries in the fobs could be weak? I'll have to go through the settings and see what's what, and experiment. Thanks for the feedback!

Actually, I was trying to turn off the triple honk when I leave the car. I do that a lot. I would leave the car running, and walk away quick. On my CTS it was quiet about missing the key. Which setting is it for turning that off?

The only way I think it might lock is if maybe you pushed the lock button manually and left the fob inside the car? There's a setting to change that behavior as well.

The only way I know the car will lock with a fob in it is when you have the second fob with you when you get out of the car. I do this all the time. My wife will leave her purse in the car at times with her fob in it. When we get out the car will beep telling us the fob is in there but since my fob exited the car it will lock after a few seconds. I have however never been able to lock the fob in the car without the second fob on me.

Re: Locking fob inside of car

off1c3r, have you tried to disable passive door lock setting in CUE and/or press the unlock button on the door with the door open while the car is running? I wonder if disabling or temp disable will prevent the honk when the car is running? May not work but easy enough to try.

    Passive Locking
If the vehicle has the keyless
    access system, this feature allows
you to select the doors to
    automatically lock during normal
vehicle exit. When the vehicle is
turned off and all doors are closed,
the vehicle will determine how many
    RKE transmitters remain in the
vehicle interior. If at least one RKE
    transmitter has been removed from
the interior of the vehicle, the doors
    will lock after eight seconds.
    Temporarily disable the locking
feature by pressing and holding the
K switch on the door for several
seconds with a door open. Passive
    locking will then remain disabled
until the door Q switch is pressed,
or until the vehicle is turned on.
    To customize the doors to
    automatically lock when exiting the
    vehicle, see “Remote Locking,
    Unlocking, Starting” under Vehicle
    Personalization on page 5‑41.

I figured you tried this setting but just in case.

    Remote Left in Vehicle Reminder
This allows the remote left in vehicle
feature to be turned on or off.
Press MENU when Remote Left in
    Vehicle Reminder is highlighted.
Turn and press the MENU knob to
select Off or On. Press BACK to go
    back to the last menu.

    Here is the other way:

Lock out protection feature can be manually
overridden with the driver door open
by pressing and holding Q on the
    power door lock switch.

No I actually never tried that. My usual motion is, open door, get out, close and walk away and hit lock on my fob from my pocket as I walk away. That was with my CTS. I tried today with the ATS and I hit the lock button on the fob as soon as I closed the door but in the normal amount of time, it still gave the triple honk. I generally don't care, but sometimes if its late at night, or you don't want to make a lot of noise, its bad.

Congratulations on your recent purchase of a 2013 ATS, don.davis. I see other forum members have engaged with your question about your key fob and doors locking. I guess none of you have ever had the pleasure of your kids throwing your car keys back into the car locked through a crack in the window yet.

Re: Locking fob inside of car

I started the car with the remote and left the fob in the car. after the car turned off the fob was still in the car and was locked. We had to have a lock smith come out to get the car unlocked. So if u start the car remotely don't leave the fob in the car because you will be locked out! a big PITA.

I assume you did not have Onstar or the remote app?

I set up the auto door locking and well, I got my car washed and they leave the keys in the car. I totally panicked because I forgot about that and well, low and behold, when they got out of the car to get the towels to dry it more, the car auto locked with the keys still inside and I was like oh shit! Well, I guess I'll see if I need to call Onstar or not. Nope, they just pushed the button on the door, it unlocked and all was well.

I'm not sure about your car and if you have the buttons on the door handles though.

I find the dealership doesn't really understand the ATS technology and features very well. Some of what they have told me in answer to my questions is simply untrue. I think GM need to send a rep to each dealership to educate their team better while providing support. It's frustrating for us buyers to be mislead. If you don't know something just say so, find the answer later and get back to me. I'd rather wait than be lied to, intentional or not, right.

Re: Locking fob inside of car

ATSigma, unfortunately the door buttons didn't work, no. Onstar took care of it. I guess, after all, it makes sense to allow the car to lock itself with the fob inside - there are plenty of times you might want to be in the car and lock the doors, whether its running or not.

Anyhoo, I don't leave the fob in the car anymore. ;-)
