DRL install: How to get wires from brake duct into the engine bay?

Going to try to install Philips Daylight 8 DRLs. Would like to know how one gets to the back of the brake duct in order to guide the wires into the engine bay. Does removing top part of the wheel well covers get you to the back of the brake duct, or is it more involved?

yes, turn the wheels all the way in, unscrew the 4 front wheel well cover screws and pull it back, you'll have full access to the back of those brake duct covers and can easily run wires up to the engine bay.

Excellent! Now that I think I know everything that has to be done, and if I can get my adrenalin flowing, I'll get up the courage to do the install. But, first I'm going to go to Custom shop and see what they will charge. I'm figuring about $150. The reason that I am checking between the two is that I'm debating between fastening the DRL holder directly over the plastic mesh, or to first cut out a holder shape from the plastic mesh, "insert" the holder and fasten it to the duct's backing. Figure that the Custom guy might make that decision for me. And, then again, being retired and not looking to take the spoils of past labor with me, what the he'll is another $150?

    Hi Flycaster,

Did you ever install the DRL's?

Not yet. I did get a quote of $130 to do the job. But the job may be more complicated than originally thought. Although the Philips Daylight DRLs have a 10% tolerance angle to compensate for an angled mount, I've been mulling about how they should be put in so that they will not cast their light too much to the side. Problem is that the brake duct housing is at a greater than 10% angle to the side. One thing we were thinking about was to cut out a mounting space in the duct so that the DRLs could be angled in to counter the duct's angle. But then the DRLs might not look like they belong. So, I'm holding off until a solution to the angled mounting is found.

    Hi Flycaster,

have you considered the oem drl lights?
I believe it would require replacing the brake duct housing.

Thanks, lover, for the suggestion; but, I think it would take more than replacing the duct...like I'd also have to get a wire harness. Overall, the expense would be too much.

I'm also eager to have DRL lights
so Its not as simple as replacing the duct adding the OEM light and wiring the circuit noted by E&G classics
