Transmission Whine and Rough Idle on 3.6L ATS4

    Hi everybody,

I've had my 3.6L Premium ATS4 for about 3 months now and have put about 2500 miles on it. I have had a number of issues from day one but two of the issues with the car the dealer tells me they can't fix.

    1. High pitched whine when off-gas

The high pitched whine is really getting to me now - whenever I let off the gas at highway speed (45+ MPH) I hear a high pitched whine that changes in pitch with road speed, not engine speed. As soon as I put my foot back on the gas the whine stops. If you have the radio on loud, most of the time this is not noticable, but given how crappy the XM radio is I drive a lot with the radio off - that is when I notice the noise most.

    2. Rough Idle
As others have noted on the forum, whenever I pull up to a stop light or I'm parked up with the engine running I get a vibration through the seat like the car is going to stall.

I've had the car in the shop twice already. The first time the dealer replaced the transfer case assembly, it made the whine different but not better. They could offer nothing that would help the rough idle.

On the second visit, they told me that the rough idle is present in all ATSs that they have test driven and they can't do anything about it until Cadillac/GM gives them some direction on what to do. They also told me that even though my ATS has a noisy whine, it is better than all the others they have test driven and there is nothing they can do about it, again without direction from Cadillac/GM.

They basically told me they can't do anything for the car until Cadillac/GM tells them what they need to do to address the problems.

I've had numerous 'ghost' problems with the intelligent light system, some squeaks and rattles, the gear shift indicator light changes intensity seemingly at random, and the XM radio is far worse than the old Sirius unit I had in the A4 that I traded in.

I love driving the car, the handling, the power, the engine note, the interior - those are all great, but overall, I am disappointed, and if the issues are not addressed I really don't want to keep this car. It was 50 grand after all - it should be perfect at that price. This is my first time buying an American car, and I wanted the best. Having had a Volvo, Saab, BMW and Audi in the past, I wanted to give Detroit a fair shake.... I really did. The ATS looks great and feels well built but these issues have really soured me to the car.

If anybody else has the same issues as me, I urge you to contact Cadillac about it so that something can be done - the dealer indicated to me that the more people report these issues the more likely Cadillac will be to do something about it.

If I have a lemon, then how do I go about taking action if the dealer tells me there is nothing they can do after only two visits? Here in NYS it takes 4 visits for the same issue before lemon proceedings can begin.

    Thanks for reading,
    Mark

Having swapped rear end gears in a number of F-bodies and Mustangs, whining on decel is often a bad pinion bearing or improperly set pinion preload. Or maybe even something as simple as low fluid level. Anyway, mine is quiet as a church mouse...again having blown up a few read ends (silly 10 bolt rear ends in those f-bodies) I've gotten used to how they sound before they let go
AirBusPilot and Ragtop 99 like this.

Good to see your still helping people on this forum with your great advise crumpet. I worked out my problems with my dealer who then got me hooked up with the GM rep. Everybody I dealt with from my service rep, salesman, GM rep and repurchase rep were awesome and very helpful. I was very impressed with how I was treated by everyone. I owned two Audis before my ATS and my Audi dealer never took care of me like my Cadillac dealer has. I love my new ATS and I will be buying another Caddy after this one because I feel they take care of their customers.

No whine from my 3.6 AWD but I'm with you on the random noises from the car. Creaking and shifting from the driver's seat, rattling from the roof near the handle above the drivers head, and the creaks from the driver's side door ruin the otherwise awesome driving experience. I had it in the dealer once already and they couldn't find it. I'm waiting for the problem to get worse or a service bulletin before taking it back in.

Well, it looks like Cadillac/GM have forsaken me. I have had no contact since I was promised it by 'Cadillac Customer Care' on this very forum.

First and last Cadillac here...are you listening GM?

Does nobody else have the same problem with the high pitched whirring sound on their ATS4s ? Started at around 2000 miles - turn off the radio, get up to about 55 and let off the gas...will whir all the way down to about 20.

    Hello Mark,

I was able to review your case and I am sorry you have not been contacted by your District Specialist yet. Your case is open and your acting agent has been in contact with the dealer on your behalf. I will notify your agent of our conversation and that you have not received a phone call from them yet.

I also have a rough idle on my 2013 ATS performance 3.6 AWD. My dealer cannot recommend anything that would correct this problem. Very frustrated that GM has'nt come up with some kind of fix for this problem. Also when I turn on my A/C I get a blast of mold odor that last for a minute or so. My dealer checked it out and saw nothing, they also sprayed some odorizer into the bottom vent but the problem still exists. I love the performance and handling of the ATS, but things like the problems I'm having create a bad reputation. Is anything being done about the rough idle issue? Laura M. from customer care, are you aware of anything in the pipeline?
    Thanks
