It is very common for a new engine to burn a little oil. Besides this, everyone from the LFX to EA888, to the subaru boxer engines will tell you that they can burn a moderate to signifcant amount of oil. Piston ring technology hasn't fundamentally changed for the last few decades. Tolerances have, but so has compression and effeciency, and other factors. Most engine's don't burn oil, some do, most of which I find are the higher performing ones (Imagine having a S85 V10 in a 100K M5 burn oil, for example) . Those are the facts.
Can't imagine an engine in this era (other than a rotary) would burn oil.
