Have had ats about a month now, in very dry climate. Ran it through car wash yesterday with
the normal spray to enter and standard wash. Turned off the car during the wash and restarted at completion.--no power steering at all. Can just imagine what would happen in a heavy rain or water puddle. Happened to a small female that didn't have the strength to muscle it.
Very dangerous situation. Have appointment with the dealer in a couple of days. Very concerned with electronic steering.
Texjrk, I'm so sorry to hear you experienced this! I can understand how this would be frustrating for you, especially after owning your ATS for only a month. Please keep us updated after your dealer visit, and if you would like me to investigate further for you or contact your dealer for you at any point, please let me know! I'm available via email at Katie_Lucille@gmexpert.com, and including the last eight of your VIN in your email would be very helpful.
ats vin 8D0135985. HAVE CALLED CADILLAC HOUSE AND THEY SAY BRING IT IN 12/26/12. WILL BE THERE EARLY. REALLY AFRAID TO DRIVE CAR IN WET SITUATIONS AS STEERING IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE.
DEALER IS AUSTIN TEXAS. THANKS FOR ANY HELP POSSIBLE-- THEY STILL HAVE MY TRADE IN---
Thanks for your prompt response, texjrk! I checked my GM resources and can report there are no open recalls on your ATS. If you're still having concerns while working with your dealer this week, please do email me and I can step in to follow up with them on your behalf. Your safety is of utmost importance to Cadillac, and I will also be in the office 12/26 and will be sure to check my email that day in case you would like further assistance!
I had the power steering failure today while driving -pulling away so not at any real speed. Appropriate error message in the DIC. Pulled (!!!!) over, restarted, no problem after that - except maybe a tad anxious.
I received this same error for the 3rd time this morning. Initially I seen it for the first time a couple of weeks prior, now I had it come up this last Friday and again this morning.
I have an appointment with the dealer this Thursday to see if they can do anything.
I don't actually lose power steering at all, I just receive the message. It seems to only happen when turning from a dead stop. All 3 times were when turning left. I don't believe it to be idle related but not certain. Remember too that manual transmission cars typically have a bit higher idle programmed into them for drivability with clutch engagement/etc.
I'll post results if the dealer has any luck figuring this out.
I have had sveral messages like u but never felt anything in the steering but do get the "service pwr steering" message.
Dealer checked and got C054 chassis error code which is angle sensor. Reprogrammed ecm and reset sensor but few hrs later
got same message so problem is not fixed. Dealer put in the latest ecm flash so obviously they have not found the software
glitch yet.

My service appointment for an actual power steering failure (plus a "service power steering" message) is Wednesday. I will report back on what, if anything, they conclude.
Pever, thank you for keeping us in the loop! I'm happy to investigate concerns further for you (or contact your dealer to follow up on an lingering concerns post-appointment), so please private message me anytime for further assistance.

Frank and Bungee, thank you as well for keeping all of us up-to-date on your progress! I look forward to your updates, and I'm just a private message or email (Katie_Lucille@gmexpert.com) if you would like my assistance working with your respective dealerships.
Tell them to do recall 12262, seat memory control module. The module was not replaced but it was reprogrammed. So far so good.
The number 12262 is from my dealer invoice printout and may be the recall number but in any case your dealer should be able to find it.
My dealer service writter was writiing up the steering problem when he said we will do the seat module recall at same time.
Let us know about whether your steering problem is fixed.
As best I understand it, Bulletin 12262 REMOVES the seat memory association from the key fobs leaving seat positioning to the CUE personalization and door buttons. If you have more than one frequent driver, you might not want that change. It is not a fix, per se, but rather it seems to be a work-around based upon a notion that the user is misunderstanding how it should work... from what I have learned.
Thanks for that explanation but I am unaware that CUE can change seats based on which driver is using car. Does the driver have to enter
CUE to change seat position. Pretty tough for a big guy getting into car that a small person has been using. I am probably
misunderstanding.

Usually if you're in that type of situation, you'll want to have Easy Exit enabled (through Vehicle settings in CUE) so it will move the seat down and back when you open the door after turning the car off, and will automatically move it into the saved position of whichever key fob is being used when you start the vehicle (memory recall).
Note that you can adjust the position of the seat after Easy Exit. The default position of the easy exit (in my opinion) was too far back and the B pillar was interfering with my ability to get in and out of the car. It's like the seats were designed for a coupe. I moved it forward until it was flush with the B pillar. It pretty much just lowers the seat so that I have more room between it and the steering wheel, since the steering wheel adjustment isn't powered.
Page 5-44, Auto Memory Recall. This personalization adds a bit of seat positioning control (timing) beyond the door panel buttons. But you could lose the ability to assign seat position to the key fob, including storing the last seat position to your key fob, if you get that recent software change.... If I understand what was explained to me earlier today.
I have a loaner car (ATS Luxury 3.6 AWD) while my car is in the shop for this error (among a couple of other things). Anyhow my loaner car had this EXACT same error this morning on the way in to work... I'm guessing if the dealers car has this error GM really has NO fix for this.. I laughed pretty hard when the car displayed this today.. :yup:
Got a call from the dealer, as for the power steering error it is supposedly related to a power steering gear that they will be replacing.
He stated the part wouldn't be in until some time next week, and I'll have to bring it back for them to replace it.
I am driving ATS 2013 since April. I stopped to gas up and when started the car back had absolutely no power steering. I left it overnight and next morning when started the car, the steering was back on. I took it to a dealer and they changed the power steering module. I think they couldn't find a problem so they just changed the module to be on the safe side, but this problem can be a costly one if it happens at the wrong time.
double goof for me today, in a drive thru and my car sounds like crap like a failing pulley bearing, I didn't hear this until I rolled window down to order, so I do a quick check to see is squeeling engine is me or car behind I shut engine down then back on, and no power steering....... so going in first thing in the morning for both issues
I am sorry for any vehicle trouble you are experiencing. I see you are taking your vehicle in for both issues. Please let me know the outcome and if there is anything I can assist with throughout the process.
ok car back from service, they reprogrammed the Steering module according the TSB based on the code the car gave for 'steering wheel torque malfunction' but unfortunately the car was whisper quiet today, no noise at all and they tried to get it to make noise all afternoon. so we'll see if that was a one time thing
nope heard it again coming off the freeway on the way to pick up my daughter, that is straight out of service to my commute ..... the weird thing is now my car is messing with me because I pulled over as soon as I could to record it again but it stopped as soon as opened the door..... so I'll keep monitoring it
on the other hand the great news is I think I'm loving the new steering program, I swear steering is firmer in sport mode, it might be in my head but the car feels less wandery (I know fake word but descriptive) this new calibration to the power steering module could be a sweet mod, I just hope I'm not suffering some placebo effect and imagining things, I'll have my wife drive it and tell me what she thinks
Hi all. Just thought I would write in to share my experiences, 3 weeks ago in a drive through coffee line my power steering failed for about just 10 seconds, with no errors on the DIC.
Then yesterday it failed again while turning left in a high traffic street at 60KM/h just about lost control. the power steering came back right after the turn. Then failed again when pulling into my driveway. I took it in for service immediately and made sure the service manager saw it not working.
The dealer called me at 10 am this morning. Stated that the power steering had a bad ground and he cleaned up the contacts. To me this is terrifying. Why did the contacts need cleaning on a 4 month old car? When it happens again, am I going to die? I asked my dealer these questions and he said that it won't happen again.
I know my wife will never drive this car again. Without an proper explanation, I have little to no faith in cleaning the contacts as a solution.
At least when I am found dead in a terrible wreck this post will exist. I wonder when this car finally kills me can GM be charged with murder?
Seriously though GM you seem pretty nonchalant about a major safety issue!
I apologize that you are experiencing failure in your power steering in your ATS due to the contacts needing to be cleaned. Unfortunately Laura or I are not technicians or engineers so we would not be able to provide you with any technical advice on why this has happened. We want you to feel safe in your vehicle and apologize for your experience. Your use of “KM/h” leads me to believe that you are located outside the United States. Right now, our team is only equipped to assist U.S. based customers. Could you let me know where you reside so I can provide you with the number for the Customer Care team in your area so they can contact your dealership and assist you in getting an explanation as well as documenting this concern? Thank you very much for your time.
You are correct. Unfortunately I am in Canada. I say unfortunatally not because Canada is a bad place to live, Its not Canada is awesome! It is unfortunate because Canadians are treated like the red headed step child by GM. I have delt with the Canadian "we don't care about customers" team. They are only there to collect a paycheque.
I have owned this car for 3 months and it has had 4 Major issues. It is my opinion that I have a lemon. I think my dealer agrees but are reluctant to admit it. At the dealer I informed them that I will not accept the car back and they had better buy it back! If they do not I will accept the loss on it. I will not drive it again!
At this point I figure if I swear off GM for good... I am 38 years old and figure I will buy 10 - 12 new cars before I die. and I have 3 Kids whom I influence Likely they will never buy a GM. so I say that is worth another 30 New cars. this is only 1 generation.
My influence to buy domestic is fading fast. I have friends who had a German car that was replaced because it was clear the vehicle he bought had issues. To this day he still talks about how well he was treated.
I wonder if Cadillac will step up or if they will try and put the screws to me.
Thanks for listening.
Gregory
If you know any Canadian customer service people who care about their clients feel free to send them my contact info.

This is exactly the type of case where you find out if a company is the kind you wish to have a long-term relationship with or not. If your concern makes it high enough into the management structure where you get someone who is truly business savvy, hopefully you will be taken care of.
Also, I don't believe customers should have to wait extended periods of time for resolution, especially if the vehicle is dangerous to drive.
These reasons are why Lexus will never sell a car to me or any member of my extended family. I also actively try to dissuade anyone at any time I find the opportunity to do so.
Regardless of the outcome for you, let us all know what happened. Otherwise, the assumption will be that they have you in a holding pattern promising resolution but not delivering.

Oh, I should also add that my ATS has been great so far! However, for anything mass-produced, it is inevitable but what a few "bad" ones will make it out of the factory without being caught by quality control. You just then expect the service department and/or customer service to step up to the plate to take care of you and the problems you encountered.
