    3700 pounds...

As we get closer to a release date, we'll be learning more - but this is definitely better than the 4000 pounds we'd been hearing about earlier...

How do you know this? Sounds like good news since the new 3-series is only 100 lbs lighter.

Scratch that...looks like the 2012 3-series is at least 200 lbs lighter.

I have a couple of sources that I can't name. This 3700 is going to be the base model. I'm not familiar with the upcoming 3-Series but I know Cadillac wants to stay close to that formula...

The base model, meaning 2.0T with 6-speed manual? That's the one I want. Will you be able to load up the "base" model with options like CUE, etc?

The 2.0T isn't the base. There is a lesser 4, from what I understand. Regardless the only thing not coming to the 2.0T option wise is AWD. Everything else is available.

I'm pretty confident the 2.0T is going to be the base engine. If not, that's a big mistake.

3700 isn't bad. It's not great. But it's not horrible.

3700 seems a little 'porkie' for a "3" series sized vehicle. When you go up against the best (the "3"series) weight is very important. I still think Cadillac is going to make a great car but hope it can create a new benchmark (for the segment).

The ATS is not going to create a new benchmark. Sorry. At least not in it's first generation. There have been a lot of compromises to the vehicle so far - and it hasn't even launched yet. The ATS will be competitive in the same way the first generation CTS was - or maybe a little better.

Who decided the 3-series is the best? The auto media? Or in other words, the guys on BMW's payroll?

It's the car they're all trying to be like. Even Cadillac said they benchmarked the 3-Series.

GM doesn't benchmark the right way. I get in arguments with them all the time on this.

They try to use measurements (results) and then try to work backward toward those numbers. They don't look at WHY the 3-series does what it does. They just measure things and say well we've got to beat that number. The measurement isn't really what they should benchmark but rather the process that BMW uses to make cars. But that would involve GM admitting they make cars wrong, which will never happen way too much hubris and arrogance in management to do that.

From what I understand, the 3-series really has a vanishingly small rear seat. Sure hope the ATS doesn't suffer this problem.

So, I'm getting geeked to see one at the NAIAS in January. You think they'll let us actually sit in one?
