re: The Cadillac ATS is probably going to weigh about...

Cadillac has been working around some issues which are raising the weight of the ATS. The Alpha platform (based off of pieces of Zeta and Sigma) has been in development since 2007. Right now, they're about 500 pounds over their original goal. It was not originally designed to use GMs new twin turbo 3.0 liter V6, and is being modified to fit it. They're adding weight to the front suspension to engineer around this issue. And there are other issues...

The sad part about this is that we may see a Cadillac ATS that's smaller than the CTS (noticeably less rear seat legroom) but doesn't weigh significantly less...

Re: The Cadillac ATS is probably going to weigh about...

You're right.. And that's what GM was originally hoping for.. But the Alpha platform wasn't originally intended for a luxury car to sit on top of it. It was supposed to be a small, light car that you can fling around and have fun with. The more luxurious the car that sits on top gets, the heavier it's going to be... Unfortunately...

Yea def upsets me because i was looking for the 3,500-3,700lb range which would have completely murdered the M3. Hopin this is a fluke n gm actually makes the car lighter or if they dont give us an AWD =-) That def make my day

I still think this car is going to be a hit.. The Infiniti G37 is kinda heavy and sells quite well so I'm not losing confidence in the ATS by any means. I'm just reporting back that things aren't going exactly as planned...

GM cars generically have weight and packaging problems. They are just bad at those type of things.

Why is it taking them so many decades to buy a foreign vehicle, reverse engineer it and do the same?

Cadillac made claims that the third CTS was going to be the lightest car in its class. And they are having problems with the ATS weight?

Oh, and foreign vehicles are just as heavy. All cars being sold right now are morbidly obese.

I was hoping for 3300-3400 using an aluminum frame. Wishful thinking.

Aluminum frame on an entry level lux car. Probably not gonna happen. I have to believe they are going to keep the ATS-V under $60k. The ATS would have to start under $40k, no?

My guess is around $32k to start. Give or take $2k.

There is a large difference between 3500 and 4000. 3500 is sorta acceptable, 4000 isn't.
