    Custom LED DRL

sup guys. like some of you, i wanted to get DRLs on my car but didnt want to go up a trim level and get a bunch of other stuff i didnt wanna pay for. ended up designing a bezel that can go on top of a custom LED light in the fog light area that at least makes it look close to something that was done OEM. i designed this bezel and had it 3d printed. then i bought some led drls that were actually not cheap. the phillips daylights. they show a perfectly smooth line of light with no hotspots. figured thats what it would take to make it look good. made cutouts in the fog light plastics (had an extra set) mounted the lights, wired them and voila. now i have DRLs that go full brightness during daytime, and dim when the headlights come on.

but it didnt stop there. in order to match the white LEDs to the headlights, i converted to HIDs and turned the DRL headlight mode off. i didnt really turn it off but found a way to bypass it using a harness and a relay. so basically during the day, i just have the bottom LEDs running. then when the headlights come on, the DRLs dim. looks better in person.

here is a crude cutout that was done with a tiny hand saw that had the handle broken off so i had to pretty much hold the blade and cut thru this sht with sheer manliness

heres the 3D printed piece over the grill

heres the light behind it and some paintwork..

what it looks like mounted on the car. this paintjob is not the final one. i removed it and had it paint matched to the black raven

some car porn with it turned on

very happy with how it turned out. especially since this makes the HIDs look great and everyone so far has said they look very OEM (obviously not the vertical style oem but they meant that these dont look like theyre tacked on as much as they would if i just slapped some led strips on the car lol)

if anyone is wondering why that particular shape, if u look at that piece of grill closely, the honeycomb shape has those angles. i basically matched those to make it look like it belongs in the same theme.

Too bad they aren't larger, that said though I think these are some of the best looking ones I've seen yet on here, nicely done!

Very nice...I too am going in a custom direction. My main problem with the leds (I considered the philips too cause they look awesome) was that they do not point straight ahead but rather go with the angle of the cover. I am going to be installing actual fog lamps and will be mounting them pointed forward. I guess they could also be used as DRL's as well. Again, yours came out great and the bezel gives it a nice flush look. HOW DID YOU BYPASS THE DRL HEADLIGHT FEATURE? That is something I would like to know!

lol that was a challenge. a very big one. but after alot of trial and error i figured it out. my initial research lead me to a DRL bypass harness made by someone named Jrox on the lancer forums. they have the same situation. his DRL bypass thing worked....but only KIND of.....sometimes it would cause the headlights to flicker like a dance party or a cop car while driving lol. definietly not a good thing especially if there happens to b a cop in front of u. basically the best way would b to buy any relay harness from ebay that says it cancels the DRL (by making the hids stay on at all times even during DRL at full power). u buy this. hook it up to ur battery like ur supposed to. then instead of plugging it into the headlight socket, splice it into one of the small corner lights that only come on during headlight operation. u will lose ur parking lights only feature but at least they will come on and off as reliably as ever. make sure the relay is a 12vdc relay and thats it.

Dealership told me today that drl feature is a federal regulation and they wont de-activate the headlight drls...Will look into the drl cancel relay.

    Re: Custom LED DRL

Has anyone looked into flashing the BCM with the T4F option code ? After planning to swap to factory HID's and add the factory DRL's I can see how this circuit will be a problem. Worst case I suppose is to use the mentioned relay/harness

    Thanks for any info

The only thing I'm confused on us how you got them at 100% when they are used as a daytime running lights and dim when the headlights are on

The DRL is Phillips brand and they all come with a module that knows when the car starts and runs the lights at max until headlights come on.

    Re: Custom LED DRL

Donavo, those drl's really are looking good. A while ago i got the Philips Daylight 8 DRLs, but never had them put in (I'll have a custom shop do the installation) because I was fearful that if the lights were put in at the same angle as the brake duct, the lighting would shoot out to the side too much. But as you DIY looks so good, let me ask a few questions:

    1. Did you use Daylight 8's or a different set of Philips drls?

    2. Do the installed lights follow the angle of the duct, or did you do some compensation to get them to point out more forward than to the side?

    3. If you compensated, how?

    4. How did you get the dlrs to attach to the duct?

I would love to use my Daylight 8, but need some assurance that they won't point too far to the side....

    Re: Custom LED DRL

No lol im actually in armenia.

    Flycaster:
Ur right Im on a trip lol. Ill answer all ur questions tho. I used phillips daylights. Not sure if it has another name but basically instead of indovodua
Led hotspots, its a continuous line of light. The dimensions of those light pieces are exactly identical to the drl 8 that u have.

It does follow the angle of the duct which is about 45 degrees. The downside of this as u know is the led gets brighter as u go to the quarter view of the car. The upside is that by the time one of them gets brighter, the other one is completely out of view. So it's not that bad.

The way I have it attached is simple. First u saw the big hole that I sawed. The light goes thru that hole. Then I made 2 L brackets about 2 inches long. That with some heavy duty double sided tape holds the lights to the break duct itself. Then on top of that I have the custom bezel attached with the same tape to cover the imperfections of the sawed out hole.

I think drl 8 will b fine. It wont look bad in my opinion
