    tool for top

I have a 90 Allante with manual top . Is there some type of tool used to attach and release the lock on the soft top ? Or do you just use a socket and ratchet to do that ?

Now, calm down. Perhaps the "hundreds of owner on this site" no longer have their Allante, and no longer frequent the place. I for one HAD an Allante.

I also answered your question on another forum. The tool I had was a T-handle (like one for a tap) that had a 1/4" drive extension in it instead of a tap, and the appropriately sized socket.

You need to go over to AllanteNet to find an active Allante owenr forum -

    Relax and enjoy the ride!

Good suggestion. To clarify: The 87, 88, and 89 and early 90's had the attachment handles on the side near the front; 90.5 and all the rest used the t handle tool.

Earl, You and I are emailing on this subject but You claim to have a phase 2 car so you have power front latches on the convertible top. All the hardtops no matter what year are manual. If you have a real phase 2 or 3 top they came with a special tool to turn the latches down. I want to say its a square end so you just need to find a socket that fits and use a ratchet.

it is not a square end. The tool is actually the same as the Porsche tool. I had an original tool with my 93 Allante, and I had another tool made at a machine shop.

    Re: tool for top

The phase 2 cars '90.5 - '92, had electric motors to hold the front header, for the soft top. The Phase 1 cars had manual levers for the soft and hard tops. Now the Phase 2 hard tops have the manual "T" handle that inserts into the lock mechanism. This tool has a handle and a recess on the other end. This recess is about a 1/4" but it is not a parallelogram. Two opposite, which would actually be top and bottom, sides actually taper, so the handle, because of the tight location, will only fit one way.

I just bought a 1/4" adjustable die handle that does the job. It's the handle with the slip bar that come in some tap and die sets. I bought it at Ace hardware for less than $10....What a deal!
