Question Brake caliper piston won't screw in all the way!

I'm changing the rear brakes on a friends '89 Allante. It has screw in type pistons on the calipers. I can't get the pistons to screw in all the way. They both go to a point, and just keep turning. Both pistons stick out over 3/4 inch from the caliper base. So there is enough room to get the pads on, but not enough room to get them over the rotor!
Am I missing something, or any ideas on how to get the pistons to go in further? Is is possible the brake pads are incorrect? Should the piston be flush with the caliper base, like the pistons would be on the front calipers?

There may be internal corrosion keeping the piston from bottoming out. You might be better off swapping them out for a set of reman calipers.

Thanks! Would it help to push the piston down with force, or will that not do anything? It just seems wierd that they both go down to a point, then just spin!
I've never had a problem with these before like this.
