Does the entire side panel come off when replacing the battery. I can bend it outward but cannot remove it from the area.

it does come off completely, slide the passenger seat forward, then tilt the seatback forward as well, the entire cover for the battery compartment slides forward and then tilts up to remove

Would be nice to know the year of Allante you own! Early cars had a lock on the cover. Unlock cover, move passenger seat full forward, tilt the back rest and the cover slides forward on a track and at the very end of the track you lift it up.

Sometimes, in my case, the panel in question is very tight against the fold down rear panel (near the rear of the panel once it is fully in place) . You will notice once the panel is removed, that there is a guide top/bottom for the panel to slide in.
