    what size 17" tires?

I have a set of STS 17" wheels on the way. My original 16" wheels have a problem. I had them chromed in Orange County (CA) around 92 and it is peeling. The bead area has bubbled and the tires won't hold pressure. It is also peeling on the surface and they look bad. Not all of them, but some of them. So. 17" wheels seem a good solution. But what size will not give me clearance problems? I was thinking that 225-55X17 would minimize the change in speedo readout, but is 235-55x17 any better? Is there another size that workes better?

    Thanks

    Re: what size 17" tires?

I put 225x55/17 on all 4 wheels. No clearance problems with turning on the front or anywhere else. However, the tires do not stick out past the wheels much. That is the tires do not swell out past the rim to provide a fatter look and give some curb protection. Maybe I will try 235x55/17 next time.
There is of course some change in the speedometer, but as I recall it is about 2 MPH at 60, so not a problem

Glad to hear it. Now I won't be too worried about going up to a 235 next time I need tires.

The outside diameter of the original 225/55/17 tires, was 25.7 inches. You need to stay within ~1/4 of an inch of that, in either direction, to avoid speedometer and odometer errors.

A 235/55/17 tire, has an outside diameter of 27.2 inches, over an inch larger. It's too big.

For a17 inch rim, the closest sizes in 225 and 235 are:

    225/50/17 - .2" larger OD than OE.
    235/45/17 - .4" smaller OD than OE.

Hmmm. I would be more worried about the greater width interfering on the front during turns. That is for the 50 or 45 aspect tires.

There's 10MM difference in width between 225 and 235 section width tires. An extra 5MM on each side of the rim is negligible, and I would be very surprised if it even came close to rubbing anything at full lock.
