    Allante trans problem

I have an '88 Allante with less than 50,000 miles. For some time at approx. 22 to 23 mph while coasting, then lightly applying the throttle the trans will flare, tach jumps up 500 rpm, then trans clunks into second gear. I've replaced the tv cable with new, replaced the modulator, verified vacuum hose integrity to the modulator and changed trans fluid and filter. I'm thinking sticky governor weights? since first and second gear are hydrallically activated not electrically like 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. Any help would be appreciated, Bill.

My 1988 Cadillac Eldorado also does this. From what I understand, this is the nature of these transmissions. The problem can be corrected by installing a trans-go shift kit but it requires removing the transmission. When my dad & I rebuilt his transmission, we installed this kit and it did eliminate the shift flare.

How did you adjust the TV cable? Did you hold the lock on the throttle body end in and pull the cable casing our or away from the throttle body, then release the lock tab. Then press the accelerator fully to the floor rather slowly and deliberately. This will cause the TV cable to self adjust with a "zipping" noise.

    Re: Allante trans problem

Adjusted it just like you say. Found the main cause, incorrectly calibrated dip stick, trans was one pint low!. Added to proper level, now no flare, no clunk! thanks for the timely response, Bill.
