    starting problems

Was having to tilt steering wheel all the way down to crank, at times car would not crank after stopping it, until it was cooled, sometimes would jump off, changed battery and starter, still had same problem. Wire broke on ignition switch giving removed key due to theft deterrent. Changed ignition switch with correct coded key. Everything seems to be working fine but car will not crank. Have charged battery and have tried to jump start it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just for clarification, you are turning the key, getting power to other components, but the car will not crank to turn over?

The actual ignition electrical switch is mounted on the lower column. Its adjustable up/down. The clue about tilting the wheel could be the fact that the rod that enters this switch is misadjusted. Locate the switch, loosen the retaining screws insert a drill bit thru the alignment hole on the switch, tighten switch, report back.

Carnut – I have an ’89 with a very similar problem….have removed all the trim below the steering column but just cannot locate the ignition electrical switch. Is this switch way down by the firewall (and inside a rather large clear rubber boot)?

NO, the clear boot covers the steering u joint. the switch is on the column itself before this clear boot. Sits on top of the column and has 2 multi wire plugs to it. Without the service manual it will be difficult to understand this drill bit centering of the switch.

    Re: starting problems

Carnut - I am having trouble with the Theft Deterrent System and on occasion have to pull the steering column all the way down.

Do you know of a way through the DIC or otherwise to disable the Theft Deterrent System? My manual is at home and I have not had a chance to look. This happened today on my way to the office after stopping for gas!

    THANKS

    Re: starting problems

Did you read my above post regarding aligning the ignition switch? you CANNOT override the therft system thru the DIC. Is the steering wheel tilt mechanism loose in any tilt postion? if so, that can be retightened by anyone that works on steering columns. That could be your whole issue.

    Re: starting problems

You can bypass the theft deterrent system permanently with a properly sized resistor (match the value to the one in the key) connected to the two wires under the dash going to the steering column. I keep a resistor in the glove box in case mine ever fails.
