Yet Another Troublesome Top Pull-Down Motor...

Remove this ad
For some time now, my top pull-down motor has been recycling. It hasn't been an issue, however, since I rarely have the top up anyway. But I decided I'd have a look at it earlier to try to fix it up.

Figuring maybe the lever behind the latch needed to be adjusted, I followed the instructions from Allantesource. The problem appears to not be the lever's adjustment, as it appears to be nearly touching (it might even be barely touching theback of the latch) when pressed. I did not attempt to adjust the J-hook.

Now, here's the interesting part. The motor does not recycle when the boot cover is not in place. If I leave the boot cover up, and then put the top down, the motor pulls and clicks into place. With the boot cover in its proper position, however, I can hear the motor continue to click as it recycles. Could the boot cover be to blame for my woes?

Sorry to ramble; I just wanted to explain the situation as best as I possibly could. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: How to Fix Top Pulldown that Cycles Continuously

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you look straight down at the pull down motor, you will see a black lever that follows the J hook down. That spring loaded lever MUST be parallel and very close to the pull down latch ( within 1/32 " ) that grabs the J hook. Most are bent back towards the trunk lid and will allow
this lever to move away from the J hook once its in the pull down latch. This will cause the pull down to never get a good ground and it will continue to cycle. What Tom did with the screw driver was to gently bend this lever forward to parallel the pull down I presume.

Re: Yet Another Troublesome Top Pull-Down Motor...

I'm starting to be able to read threads about the convertible top pulldown motor and not have by blood pressure spike too much. My top and I are either getting better or I'm getting numb.

Re: Yet Another Troublesome Top Pull-Down Motor...

If it works fine hard cover up, then I would look at the pull down motor assembly to be adjusted ever so slightly up. I think you're dealing with the thickness of the cover. Also if you look at the J hook, you will see a small allen headed screw behind it in the bottom window frame. Thats adjustable to make sure the J hook stays in alignment with the latch as the motor pulls down. I really think just moving the whole motor assembly up will fix it. Just scribe a line around the motor as a point of reference
