Too Late!

He came, we saw, I bought a 91. A dealer in Flint had his brother, who's into Cadillacs, try to sell it on Craigslist. The interior is maroon and convertible top is black. ABS pump-and-power-up test was OK. The car sat for a number of years, so the oil and trans pans were dropped and new seals installed. Issues we spotted today while the car was up on the rack:

- Car was repainted original silver sometime, but there is no evidence of accident damage

- Has new AC compressor, but AC leak evident

- Needs front brake pads

- Needs tires - good tread but some dry rot starting

- Rear top pulldown motor runs continuously and doesn't engage (Called AllanteSource to get a quote while we were looking the car over)

- Rear cover does not always latch

- Slight fogging of left headlamp

- Rusty, but intact, muffler and tailpipe.

My mechanic will have the car for the next couple weeks fixing the above and changing all the fluids.

The car isn't as perfect as my vette was, which is good since I want to eventually use it as a summer driver if it proves reliable.

So the journey begins...

Hey Greg,
From your avatar can we surmise that you bought the '91 silver? Tell us the tale of how the good fairy turned the Vette into a silver Allante!

OOPs shoulda read before askin. Good luck!

Re: Wish Me Luck - Or Save Me Before It's Too Late

My mechanic found a local buyer for my vette last Friday. This silver 91 with 33K miles was local and looked & drove pretty good when I went to see it last week. My mechanic and I discussed how I wanted to use the car. After today's inspection, I decided to pull the trigger on this car for $10K and have fun with it. (As opposed to what I did with my vette - spend all summer looking for the perfect car and then be too anal with a near-pristine car.)

Re: Wish Me Luck - Or Save Me Before It's Too Late

Congrats Greg! Classy looking Allante. I was a hair away from buying one (a 91 black) a few years ago, but ended up with my 300ZX Twin Turbo instead. I had the same problem with my Z as you did with the Vette. I was afraid to drive it as it was pristine. Therefore, I never really enjoyed it as much as I should have.

Swing by and show it off to me when you get it back from your mechanic!

Todd

I cannot place enough importance on at least two:
- change coolant .. failure to do that, will end up in failed headgaskets
- FLUSH ABS per allantenet instructions .. failure to do that will end on a $1,200 repair.

let us know what is done with the pull down .. ?

thanks

Re: Wish Me Luck - Or Save Me Before It's Too Late

Also very important:
1.) Add Barsleak tabs to coolant. Failure to do so could result in coolant getting into oil through the intake manifold.
2.) Inspect taillight sockets and bulbs. Make sure the correct bulbs are being used and sockets have dielectric grease. Wrong bulbs or corrosion in socket can result in melted taillight arrays resulting in having to replace at $500 per taillight.

GOLD Bars Leak (organic) not the metallic
brass base 2057 bulbs, NOT 1057 or silver base 2057.
dielectric, yes.

and

wipers .. if they dont fit under the hood, someone installed the wrong ones.
