EDRs record about 10 seconds at a time, erasing over the previous data as it goes. If the airbags deploy, it saves the last data. If I get plowed by some speeding maniac I want his EDR data used in court against him. If my ABS fails to stop me while I'm traveling at a safe speed, I would also like this data to be available to allow for a defective product lawsuit.
The Orwellian vision of a NORAD style computer room monitoring the speed of everyone on the road in real-time is ridiculous. Fear of the Government is the easiest thing for a sensationalist writer to tap into to make a story seem more important than it is.
