    Carb replacement

What's a good replacement carb for the stock Rochester Quadra jet on the 472 motor? Looking for better performance and gas milage. This is off a 69 hearse and after 35 years the old carb works but isn't quite up to snuff.

    Re: Carb replacement

You're going to get a lot of arguments on this one. When I replaced my quadracrap, i put on an edelbrock 750cfm carb w/ electric choke. I love those things. They're a lot better than the quadracrap IMO. If you go for something like an edelbrock or holley, etc., you're going to need to go down to autozone, kragen, etc. and get an adaptor for the quadrajet to whatever carb you get. They're like $10-$15 and come with gaskets. You're not going to get better performance AND better gas milage with anything. If you want more performance, you need a bigger carburetor which is going to use more gas. 750cfm is a mild carb for the 472 and should be enough for you. If you really want performance and you're building up your motor, get a 800 or 850cfm demon.

    Re: Carb replacement

I realize that more performance means more gas. Perhaps I used the wrong term. By "performance" I meant starting, idleing, and such. I was thinking Holley but Edelbrock is a good carb as well. Anything is better than the Quadracrap. What type of gas mileage are you getting? I feel that this Quadracrap is just guzzling the fuel. Have you had any problems with the 472 running a little hot on the highway? Thinking may need new radiator also. Once again works but not quite up to snuff. Checked the thermostat and all is fine there. Maybe a good flushing? After all this is a 35 year old car and I'm going over it bit by bit. I've only had it about 12 days or so. I'm no rich man so a little at a time. Thanks.

    Re: Carb replacement

Well right now that carb is probably the original on there so anything is going to be better. As for better working carb, I like the edelbrock and the electric choke is awesome. I've sadly never been on the highway with her. She's never been able to go into drive. The furthest I've gone was coasting her down the hill to get to school. The engine ran strong and smooth, but the tranny was crap.
