Spark plugs made before the now common tapered seat variety had gaskets.

Re: spark plug mystery

hello.

I have no experiance with the V8-6-4 engines so i dont know if it schould be anything special things there but if not: The things that are there are maybe anti fauling spacers.
They are used on engines were the plugs gets so oily that they fauls. Instead of fix the real problem with pistongrings or/and valve shafts guidings you can, as a quick fix put those spacers at the fauling cylinders and the sparkplugs keeps clean longer.
That are recomended to not use those spacers to more than half the cylinders on a engine.

Re: spark plug mystery

Maybe they are heat shields.

Re: spark plug mystery

Sounds like heat shields (see attached, no it's not on my Caddy, but it sounds like what is described) I've only seen these on newer engines.

Re: spark plug mystery

Let me guess... the plugs thread into this spacer and the spacer threads into the block. These are called plug de-foulers. The de-fouler is essentially a seperate chamber in which the gases flow in through a small hole at the block end of it... the plug sparks... ignites gases in chamber... in turn ignites gases in cylinder. They do work in the matter of keeping your plugs clean but they are a huge performance draw, manufacturers themselves recommend not to install on more than half of the engine's cylinders.

REMOVE THEM!

Re: spark plug mystery

yeah no one has said these things are stock they must be the de foulers. im gonna take em off and if the seals are a little bad and it leaks a little ill just put in oil stabiliser and that should work ok. its worked for me before, in fact ive always heard to fix a little oil burning with the oil, not the plug untill now. although i hope they arent messed up real bad because im still cleaning the sludge off of these heads.
well see what happens. thanks guys.
