Re: 500 Fuel Injection

Check out www.rockauto.com Most of the EFI controll stuff is under "emissions" once you have selected your vehicle.

Re: 500 Fuel Injection

Another question on my 76 Eldo w/ EFI. The engine idle takes forever to 'settle down'. It usually runs at fast idle for a good 25 mins or so. After that (usually) it will run at maybe 500 rpm almost at a stall. Is this the fast idle valve or some other electronic part? I checked rock auto and they do not have a fast idle valve, but they do have am 'idle stop solenoid' Not sure if this is it or not. I know when I press down on the FIV it slows the idle...
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: 500 Fuel Injection

It should idle fast for maybe 5 min. not 25. There should be no tension on the fast idle valve after approx ten min. This part is correctly called a "choke heater" With the engine off and the air cleaner stud removed, you can turn the heater a half turn and it will pop up out of the throttle body. Look closely at it where the little copper lever goes up and depresses the micro switch. Sometimes the lever is misaligned. Assuming the car is fully warmed up, you can adjust the curb idle with the screw at the front center of the throttle body. Is the car getting to operating temperature quickly? This could affect duration of choke heater being on.

Re: 500 Fuel Injection

Thanks

Yes the car warms up quicky, it just takes a long time for the idle to slow down. I have removed the 'choke heater' before. If I push down on it, the car idles normally. Actually, If I let it run for 20 mins or so, then shut it off for 20 mins and restart, it idles normally. So there is an adjustment in the heater?

Re: 500 Fuel Injection

No adjustment unfortunatly. The 12 volts to it warms up a wax? within it to allow it to lower. Try cleaning out the bore the spring is in, as well as the plastic that sits in the spring. One other thing to check is the exhaust heat crossover under the throttle body. If plugged with 30 years of oil residue, it might restrict warm air warming up the throttle body. Thats maybe why it restarts warm at a normal idle. If not restricted, the intake runner will be VERY hot to the touch! I have two heaters I no longer need. One looks new and the other looked newer than the car I got it from. I will sell them if interested. Send me a private e mail.
