    1968 Deville Convertible Died

My brother has I car that I have to help him work on. We got the brakes working but now it died. He had trouble with it overheating and installed new radiator and water pump. He was out driving and it died. It started and ran enought to limp home and has not ran since. We are getting gas and spark and seem to have compression but have not check with a meter. I am guessing timing chain. Does anyone know how to check without tearing down? Any other suggestions for trouble shooting? What about unleaded gas? Could he have burned the valves out? I am working on finding out displacement but currently not sure.

How fresh is the carb, and fuel filter? You could have a rusty tank that is clogging up the fuel filter and carb. I'd check that out first, before tearing the engine open hunting a valve timing problem.
Also, the 472's will run fine on unleaded gasoline, so that's not the problem.

We did check for gas. Filter and all are good. I have not torn down the carb because the engine will not even fire when we dribble gas thru the carb. Could the timing chain stretch bad enough to cause a no run situation or would it have had to jump a tooth?

There's a chance the cam timing is really far off... I'd do a compression check just to see if something comes up. If it won't fire even with some starter fluid, I'd look at the ignition system next.

Unleaded gas should be fine in any 472 or 500.

Since you claim it DOES have spark, you should bump the engine over (or turn by hand) to line up the timing mark w/ TDC...

Pull the dist cap off and check to see if the rotor is at cyl 1 or 180 out...
(180 out could be exhaust stroke...)

If its not REAL CLOSE to 1 or 180 you probably have lost time...

I think you could probably use a timing light to check as well, if it's inductive... you did say spark was there... but the higher-speed rotation could be detrimental in the long run...

Have you put new plugs in it? If not do it.
