    472 to 500 Conversion

Hey, I've been busting blood vessels out in my head trying to find a local 500 that isn't astronomically priced. The other day I find out a guy that lives 3 houses down from me has a 472 that he'll give me for $100. I was just wondering, what, aside from boring the cylinders out, do I need to do to convert this 472 to a 500.

Different crank and pistons. I'd just run with the 472! It's still a great engine, and you can bore it out to damn near 500 cubes!

    Re: 472 to 500 Conversion

$100? Does it run? Gosh, even as a solid core thats a steal.

Yeah, its the crankshaft... pistons, I woudln't worry about too much since I would go with a nice set of aftermarket ones.

Passing up a very good 472 for a 500 is not worth it... when I start getting into the big blocks again, I'll take either I can get... by the time I am done with it, it'll be over 500CID anyway .

    Re: 472 to 500 Conversion

    A 500 is a longer stroke version of a 472, both use a 4.3" bore.

If you want to make a 500 out of it you'll need the crank and pistons. Rods are the same.

Or you could do a 4.42" bore and get 498ci. But that's even more work. It would rev out pretty well though and you'd never have to worry about valve shrouding.

    Re: 472 to 500 Conversion

Lets say you get a 472 because it was cheaper/more easy to find then a 500...

Then you would want to find a 500 crank... isn't that going to be just as hard to find now... because enable to have a crank, you would have to also have a block, so if someone had a short or long block, they would just sell it as a complete engine.. no? How difficult/expensive would it be to pick up a 500 crank?

I don't even need another motor sitting around but I'd get it for $100 as well, just to have.

I agree with the others, just use the 472 as is.
