Red face Help with timing on a 500!

    Hi there,

I just bought a 1975 Coupe de Ville,
and I'm wondering if some kind soul could help me!
Does this 500CID engine have points? I want to set the timing and I cannot find the emissions control sticker that chiltons refers to. I have been running it on 87 octane, so I wonder what I should set the timing to for optimal performance.

The exhaust kinda stinks of gas, if thats any indication of the state of timing its currently in...

I bought this car to cruise around with my blues band in, if it comes to guitars & tube amps I know what I'm talking about, but I'm just learning with this car!

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

    Jon Knight,

Ok, so I got the information on the timing, normally it should be 6 before TDC
and its HEI, but is this still what it should be set for for 87 octane?
Also, which hoses should be disconnected before setting the timing?

    Thanks Again!

Disconnect the vacuum hose that goes to the vacuum advance canister that's attached to the distributor. Plug it with a screw or something. These motors seem to like 10* base advance, around 33* total.
