In a 3500 Lb car yes.
In a 4000 Lb car probably not.
In the 5000 Lb car they came in most definetly not.

Much depends on the vehicle. The shape and aerodynamics will make results happen.

15 MPG Around town in my 4.9 deville is good!

How do you get 15 around town in a 8.2L in a 5000lb car?

    That's exactly my point.

Trying to figure out how much it will cost to save money.
Can't figure out how much without knowing how many city miles you will be driving.

Re: Imagine a 500cid with PFI!

Ah I see, as in cost of EFI vs. cost of fuel. No way for me to know how many city miles I'll be driving.

How much of a difference could MPFI make? Let alone TBI...

Re: Imagine a 500cid with PFI!

Nope not the cost of EFI. You still are not going to get 15 around town even with EFI. No way. Not in a full size Cadillac with a 3 speed. I was thinking more along the lines of another car that CAN deliver that kind of mileage. I've seen a lot of people spend thousands to save hundreds in fuel over the years though. Just wanted to run the numbers as an exercise for the mind.

Ah I see. I thougth you were referring to my statement about EFI not being worth the money.

I would probably just get an '80s Honda...nothing over $500.

Re: Imagine a 500cid with PFI!

I'll agree that the 472/500 was capable of some decent mileage. But, they have to be properly tuned, and leave the lead shoes at home. Even a slightly out of tune 500 with a heavy foot can dip into the single digits around town and vever hit the 15 mpg mark on the highway.

For example, my '70 Fleetwood can and does get 20 highway, and the '75 Coupe deVille I had for many years got an astounding 23 mpg highway. I was in disbelief the first time I checked it that I ran the numbers 3 times! Now mind you since I live north of the border, these numbers are Imperial. We have 4.55 litres per gallon, your mini gallons have 3.79 litres per gallon.

Re: Imagine a 500cid with PFI!

So for our mini-gallons, that'd be 19.2mpg with the '75 CDV and 16.7mpg with the Fleetwood.
That's really good mileage out of the CDV! Any details - cruising speed, terrain, any mods?
IIRC, the CDV should have the ultra-low 2.28 axle and the Fleetwood should have either a 2.93 or 3.15?
Certainly shows what an overdrive would do for these cars. One could get a final reduction even steeper (numerically lower) than the '75, but with the same or better off-the-line performance of the earlier ratios.

Re: Imagine a 500cid with PFI!

That CDV would have 2.73s if I'm right. 77+ would be 2.28s I think. I know my 75 shifts way earlier than my 78 did.

It's not too hard to believe 19mpg, just as long as it was a long trip at relatively low speeds. I got around 9 highway in my 75 one trip because I was doing 100 the whole way. At 60 I could see it getting 16+.
