    What would it cost?

    Well, I love the 472 in my DeVille so much, I've been thinking lately about putting a 472/500 into my '77 Camaro. Now, I know this has been done before, and I'm familiar with the basics of how to put it in. What I want to know is how much does it cost to build up a Caddy bigblock?
    I'm not looking for anything too fancy at this point, just enough to put it in the 400hp ballpark. How far can I trust the stock cast rods, or will I need to find forged rods? I've heard olds rods can work? What kind of bill am I looking at to make this a trustworthy hi-po street motor?
    Oh, and the kicker: this car is a stick (well, I converted it). No WAY am I having a Camaro with a slushbox. What needs to be done to get the clutch linkage and all hooked up with a Caddy? Does the Caddy even have a place to mount the Z-bar, or will I need a hydraulic clutch? I know I'll need a BOP bellhousing, but what about the flywheel and so-forth? Yes, I know I'll need a strong tranny; looking at a TKO600 (rated for 600lb*ft, with overdrive!) if I do this...

    Contact Cad Company or MTS or check out thier websites for info on manual transmission conversions. I know that the crank has to be drilled for a pilot bearing, and they sell the flywheels.

    Headers, intake manifold, and a cam should get you into the range near 400 depending on the cam. Especially if you get a 10:1 motor and some light porting of the heads... At these levels definately stick with the stock bottom end. Unless you go wild on the cam stock rockers will work too. So it would probably be under a grand. Or hell you could be even cheaper and run a stock motor with a 150 shot on it.

    Well, as I'm piecing this together, I think a grand might be a bit optimistic, but I'm including the cost of clutch/bellhousing...

    Speaking of the clutch, I've found several universal bolt pattern bellhousings so that's no issue, but I'm 99% sure I'll have to go hydraulic for the clutch because I don't think making a Z-bar and pivots would be so fun. Does anyone have any great ideas on where/how to mount the clutch slave cylinder?

    For the cam, I'm thinking a #15 grind from MTS. Sounds like just the ticket. A thump at idle, good RPM, but good vacuum for power brakes. They do say it's on the edge for stock rods, but maybe I'll switch the stock bolts for ARP ones...
    What is the difference between the VT and MT cams on the MTS price list? Does one kit include springs or something?

    Hehehe. 500cid would sure beat my 350... Next up: breaking the driveline

    If I remember right, one has steeper lobes, so the valve opens faster. But this puts more strain on the valvetrain, so a good valvetrain is needed. I'm pretty sure the springs and retainers are separate, but they might sell them as kits. I know I bought them seperately.
