After redone my -68 472 engine I have a problem.
When I fill it up with 5 quarts of oil it does not show on the dip stick.
Tried about 6 quarts and I get the lover grade on the stick.
Any ideas about this.
Should I trust the amount or the oil stick?
Tube, a new one, completely inserted.
Don't thought of measure the spoil, it was about 6 month ago when I lifted the engine out.
OM sais 4,7 liter / 5 quarts with new filter.
I have now 5,7 liter in the engine.
New dipstick tube - aftermarket, chrome dipstick ???
Whatever - pour in the recommended amount of oil with filter, run the engine to fully warm, shut down for 5 minutes and check level. Use a file to mark the stick.
I build marine Olds 455s, using different MOROSO pans. The procedure is to pour in the recommended amount minus one quart, run the engine a while, shut down and mark the stick. Now pour in the other quart, run a bit, check and again mark the stick. You now have a custom set of ADD and FULL marks.
In some engines it doesnt take much overfill to cause oil to hit the crank throws, whipping the oil to foam. I would use the recommended oil fill if you are running a stock oil pan.
That's a 455 bored to 461 - tricky engine. MOROSO 8 quart pan and a Fram HP-2 one quart filter - 9 quarts total. Notice the hose barb in the pan drain plug - for remote pump and oil change system
Hmmm.................... If you're careful you can trim the top of the tube to calibrate it. Been there, done that - on the engine in the picture, matter of fact..
Yeah. I answered this question for someone else a while back. Did you use the original pan? The pans for the El Dorados is a 7 qt. pan. The standard 472 is a 5 qt. pan.
