    425 wont shift from reverse

    Sorry for the typo in the title. The bus won't shift out of first.

    I have a 425 RWD in a 1954 Ford bus. After sitting for a few years, the transmission wont shift from first. I have checked transmission fluid. I do not know these motors, and transmissions well. Where should I start. I was told replace valve bodies. Thoughts? Also, what are my options for transmissions. I was told that some other tradnmissons will adapt. Thoughts?

    Thank you for any help you can be.

    Note, I did replace the vacuum modulator.

    First thing is to check the vacuum at the modulator with a gauge. It should be 15 or more at idle. If you have a good vacuum and the hose is not cracked next is to check the governor. The governor can have a broken gear or stuck parts. There is a square cover at the rear of the transmission with 4 bolts. Take the cover off, some fluid will come out, not too much . with the cover off you are looking at the governor.. Just grab the governor and pull straight out.. let us know what you find... Dave

    We are assuming you have the TH400 transmission that originally were used with this engine. Best trans for handling the torque from these engines and the most reliable. As it has sat around for a time, you may want to check the fluid for water, if you haven't all ready. Condensation can cause problems with these trans. If the fluid is milky pink, that is an indication you have water mixed with the fluid. With the pan down you can observe the valve body and ensure everything is free.
