    identifying year

I found a used 472 motor only an hours drive away. Problem is the guy doesnt really know anything about it. How would I be able to identify the year? Also it has a rear sump oil pan installed. Can that be changed back pretty easily? For 100 dollars it could be a safe gamble.

I need an extra motor I can rebuild while driving the car.

Well.........there's always the google. I was curious myself and took a look.

It is pretty tricky to tell them apart but at least you can verify that it isn't a 425 or 368. I don't think any 472's had rear sumps but not sure about the Eldo's

You can tell what you have by the casting numbers..The block number is in the back of the motor by the oil pressure sender and the head number that can be seen after you take off the rocker arm cover.. these two numbers will tell you what 472 that it is... If it is a 500 you will also need the crankshaft casting number..
68-68 eldos had rear sump 472's....

I sent him an email asking for the casting numbers. No response yet.
