    Rebuilding a 472

Hello all.. I need your opinion on my 472 rebuild.. I pulled the engine out of my 1973 to freshen it up a little...It had oil leaks...primariy the rear main seal...other than that it runs perfect...I pulled it because i was also planning to paint the firewall and clean it up under there a little..I already took all the accessories off.. and lifters intake and other stuff.. I don't have too much experience rebuilding engines..I took a class in the past but I dont feel too confident doing it by myself..A mechanic who happens to be my neighbor offered to help with the build..He seems like he is very knowledged but he is also young..People have told me that some newer generation mechanics are not too good with old engines..Here is the question...Do I go ahead with a complete rebuild..or do i just change seals and obvious things like rings..

If I go with the rebuild I plan to purchase a complete rebuild kit, change to HEI, Edelbrock Intake although not sure if I will have hood clearance issues, what other things do you suggest I just want to spice it up a little nothing too major.. Can you recommend a cam I was looking to get one from MTS..Unsure which one to get.. Lets make this our mild project.. Im taking detailed pictures of my build!!!

Thanks to all who took the time to read this..

    Rebuilding a 472

When an engine is running with no funny noises, no serious oil use, no overheating, I don't touch the rotating parts. Just get on a new timing chain, check out distributor & oil pump, throw on outer gaskets & seals, maybe deal with some rocker wear, and keep driving it. There is some tricky stuff to getting an engine put back together & broken in exactly right; a mistake will leave you much worse off than before. Hop Ups, that's another ballgame, but those people usually aren't looking for a 200,000 mile engine. Bruce Roe

    Re: Rebuilding a 472

Yeap I think im going to leave it alone..many people tell me the same..The engine runs strong, no hesitation or problems at all..I'll probably just inspect it and make sure nothing funny is going on in there.. Im definitely going to go HEI, change fuel and oil..timing chain..gaskets and freeze plugs..and Dress it up a little..Yes, Rebuilding it will be kind of pointless because the car is a summer car and only goes to shows and here and there..I can always pull it out again if necessary..Any tips on what to look out for? Will changing the intake to an edelbrock do anything for performance other than looking pretty? Thanks Bruce Roe

I don't think an aftermarket intake will allow the A/C compressor to mount. Bruce Roe

I got rid of the A/C compressor system long ago..so that wont be an issue..
