    Help Installing Fuel Pump

    Hi All,

I need help installing the fuel pump on a 1969 Eldorado. The carb was not getting any fuel, so I changed the filter and tried to crank the engine and see if fuel would come out of the fuel line before I reattached it to the carb. No fuel was coming out. I went ahead and started work on replacing the pump. I was able to get it out, but having trouble putting the new one in. I can't get the pump to sit flush mount with the engine. The bottom of the fuel pump is not flush with the engine. Can someone give me some advice on how to put the fuel pump in so that it sits correctly in the engine and flush? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Re: Help Installing Fuel Pump

There is a push rod in the engine that must be lined up with the arm on the pump when it's installed. You must have the push rod off to one side of the pump arm. Sometimes turning the engine over a bit will let the pushrod retract more, letting the pump come closer to the mounting flange, to bolt it on. The push rod is moved by an eccentric on the front of the camshaft. Turning the engine a bit will bring the low side of the eccentric around, letting the rod retract some, for easier pump installation.

Your engine should be a 472, which has a concentric which is mounted on the front of the cam. If you bump the engine a little you should get the concentric in a position so you can mount the engine flush to the mount pad.

I just installed mine a few days ago. It really just takes a few good tries to get it in by try inserting it at different angels till you get it right. Hope this helps and good luck.

With the coil wire off, bump the starter with the ignition key until the eccentric on the nose of the cam gear rotates enough to allow flush mounting of the pump. I assume you verified fuel getting to the pump from the tank??
