76 Eldorado Fuel Filter

Hi all,

I'm trying to change the fuel filter on my 76 Eldorado. I removed the primary choke pull off to get access to the smaller fuel line nut (which I was able to do), but I still can't get a wrench on the large filter inlet nut at the carb. to separate the fittings. How in the world can I get a wrench on that filter inlet nut? I hope I don't need to move the A/C compressor.

Usually that 1" nut isn't a problem but I don't think I've ever tried it with a Caddy AC compressor in the way. It doesn't sound promising but I would think that job could be done without moving the compressor. Then again, maybe not, because it does take up all the room in that area. I'm almost positive I changed the fuel filter on my 78 and I don't remember moving the compressor. Maybe if you start loosening the smaller nut the larger one will move to a more favorable position.

Yeah, I was hoping for that too. Actually, I was hoping the fuel line would break loose first, then I could remove the big 1" inlet nut with a socket. But, of course, when I turned the fuel line fitting, it instead broke the big nut loose, failing to separate the two. And, I can't rotate the fitting much without kinking the fuel line because the 1" nut is still attached to it. Looks like I may have to move the compressor.

I gave up when the wind started whipping up and the temperature dropped to 20 degrees here in Michigan and just put it all back together in a few minutes. My hands were freezing.

I have definitely got it off without removing the compressor. I'll take a look at mine tomorrow and try to see what you are talking about. BTW, on your carbonator, which direction does the thing screw in from, front-to back, or does the fuel line enter from the passenger side?

I'd appreciate it if you could give me some advice. The fitting points toward the passenger side of the car.
