Re: How much power does the 500 makes?

The 500 was first available on 1970 Eldorado. The Eldorado was the only Cadillac to get the 500 until 1975. In '75 and '76 all Caddys had the 500 (except the Seville). '76 was the last year the 500 was offered.

Lots of good Cadillac info there. Look under the years 1970 through 1976.

Keep in mind that those numbers are what they rated the engines, not what the engines actually delivered. Expect 300hp and 460-480 ft.lbs. from a low compression 500, and maybe 20-30 more for a high compression earlier 500.

    1972 *** 235 *** 385
    1973 *** 235 *** 385
    1974 *** 210 *** 380
    1975 *** 210 *** 380

Well they were doing ok in '70 but during the early 70's is when the heavy emission standards first started being placed on new cars. Detroit just didn't have the technology to meet the emissions standards so they had to drop compression and add 500 miles of vaccum lines to control emissions equipment. IMHO nobody really recovered from this until the mid to late 80's when fuel injection became reliable.

Also consider that in '70 they were using gross HP ratings and by '72 they had switched over to net HP ratings. So not all that difference was due to emissions and de-tuning of the engines.

There is a major difference between the engines of those years. I had a '70 sedan that would burn the back tires until you chickened out. I also had a '73 and a '74 that would have a hard time chirping the tires. I belive any of those engines can be rebuilt to HP specs but others here smarter than me would have to let you know about that.
