Replacing Q-Jet with TBI?

Remove this ad
I have two engines, both are not Cadillacs, but One is in a Cadillac. So maybe somoene will move this thread to the appropriate forum. However, since they are both QJet engines, I think they fit this group of engines well.

I have an 81 CDV with a 4.1 Buick engine (V6) that has a Qjet, and an 84 Olds 98 with a 350 Rocket with a Qjet (replaced the 307 with the 350).

Trans-dapt makes adapters that will put a Chevy TBI throttle body on the Quadrajet Manifold. They make two versions, one mounts the Throttle body over the rear carb ports, the other mounts it over the front.

First of all, has anyone done this mod?

It seems like it'd be fairly easy. The GM (Chevy) TBI setup will run with any of the electronic ESC distributors. Both of my vehicles have that.

The sensors are fairly interchangeable, although you'd need an Air temp sensor, from what I read. You have to have an electronic fuel pump too, and I think the plumbing for the charcoal canister is different too, they use an electronic solenoid that neither of my vehicles with the carb use (they have vacuum controled valves for the canister).

I'm thinking this seems fairly simple. Computer, wiring harness, sensors, bolt it all together and run it.

How well will the computer work for these engines though. My fear is that the chevy computers may not run these engines that well. My thought is grab a 4.3TBI V6 setup from a chevy for the 4.1 in the cad, and a 5.7-350TBI setup for the olds engine.

does anyone have suggestions before I dig into this?

Re: Replacing Q-Jet with TBI?

Completely possible using a Megasquirt setup. I wouldn’t think you could ever get a different engines computer to work well.
