Need Help With 74 Devile Oiling Problems

Remove this ad
I have a 74 Deville with a 472 that I just bought. I noticed that the valves were ticking ad took off the valve covers, only to find that there was a lot of flakky oil residue under the covers. I started the car with the covers off and there was some oil dripping off some of the rockers. I ran engine flush through the motor two times. Now there is oil squirting out of one pushrod and still dripping off of a couple of others. Could the pickup be clogged or is the oil pump bad? Or is it some other problem that I should be looking for?

Re: Need Help With 74 Devile Oiling Problems

Engine overheating and not changing the oil can cause this problem. Make sure you do not have an overheating problem. Check your oil pressure if you can. I would them replace one quart of oil with a quart of MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil). It's not really a mystery; it has a lot of cleaners in it. It does thin the oil a bit. You might want to go to one higher viscosity with the regular oil. If this doesn’t work after a few hundred miles or so, you could change the lifters out.
