I always thought the Cadillac 500 was the biggest engine around, but I was lately informed by a friend of mine that a Chevy 572 exists. Well, now since the 500 seems so small, I'm wondering if anyone has swapped in the 572. Just curious. And if so how it handles and does on gas. Is that even practical; I've never heard or seen of it before (maybe it's a dumptruck engine, hmm?)
I was just surprised, simply because I always had pondered putting a 500 into my Cadillac because it was the biggest...now its not. |

It has valve spring that are quarter sized at the most.
The ports are dinky.
Yes this is all very good for an engine that never sees 5500. It make great torque on the bottom end to move the boat.
A big block Chevy will tow the boat while in a tow truck |

Big Cadillac engines were built to haul heavy cars and deliver max economy. Valvetrain did exactly what it was designed to do. These engines always lasted longer than every other American brand if cared for. Big block Chebby was a totally different animal. Large ports always equals large gasoline bill. The Chebby makes for a great gofast powerplant. Cadillac needs a lot of stuff to make it race. 4 X 4 mochine might do better with a Cad powerplant as they can use torque. All out cheap drag racer schmall block Chebby rules, yawn. |

The 572 is a whopping $16,999.00. And it carb'd; you'd think a new engine would be EFI. |

It is basically made for old guys with tons of money who want the craziest engine ever in their hot rod or what have you. The Caddy 500 is still the biggest V8 engine ever put in a mass produced passenger car. Jay Leno has a 572 in his first car. Idon't remmber the magazine, but they said that he had his first car, a 50's Buick, rusting in his yard and Crate had this new crazy engine, the 572, which he put in the Buick. He restored it to look stock. Quite the sleeper... |

| | Cadillac Owners Member | | | | | Re: Has anyone swapped in a Chevy 572? My neighbor bought one a couple of years back and put it in a 1969 Camaro. It cost a fortune because he had to redo the tranny and put a different axle in to handle it. His had the 12.5 to 1 compression, so he had to run race fuel in it. I believe he said it got around 5 miles to the gallon though if he kept his foot off the gas. He sold it after a year-he couldn't afford to run it... |

What's it's miles per gallon, I wonder? Or should I say gallons per mile...like marine yacht Cats.
Were the old Cadillac V16s even that big?? |

Can't forget about the Merlin airplane motor someone stuffed into a 55 Chevy. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
