1976 Sedan Deville 500ci oil capacity

Remove this ad
I just rebuilt the 500 in my 1976 Sedan Deville. Had an issue with the dipstick tube and replaced it with a new one. Unsure if it is the correct one. I never new how much oil this tank would hold from the beginning, si I just want to make sure I don't under or over fill it. Just need to know how much oil it holds. It has the stock oil pan on it.

Thanks.

Hello!

A stock -76 500 RWD holds 5 US quarters if the filter is changed and 4 us quarters if no filter changed. I guess your engine is dry after the rebuild and would need 5 quarters.

Thanks a ton. Our parts department must have gave the wrong dipstick tube, she has 5 qts in her and only touches the very bottom of the dipstick.

Re: 1976 Sedan Deville 500ci oil capacity

You could just cut the top of the dipstick tube with a tubing cutter, and calibrate it to the 5 quarts that you have in it now.

What about a 76 500 out of an elderado? Is that still the same 5 qts?

That engine uses a different oil pan, so it may be different.

Re: 1976 Sedan Deville 500ci oil capacity

Hello.

According to the 1976 owners manual page 80, (where I got the numbers for the RWD cadillacs with 500 engines) is the engine oil capacities for the Eldorado- 5 u.s. Qts without filterchange and 6 u.s Qts with filterchange.

The 1976 Deville I had only held 3 quarts. I think there must have been a lot of smudge in the pan.

Cool Re: 1976 Sedan Deville 500ci oil capacity

My "75" holds 6 quarts with a filter change.
Factory oil pan and I am almost certain all 500's are the same...

Re: 1976 Sedan Deville 500ci oil capacity

Make sure you use a oil that will not distroy your flat tappet cam.. Over the road gasoline motor oil has had the additives that are nessasary for a flat tappet cam taken out..The additive is not good for sensors and maybe cat. Best to use a racing oil such as VR1 valvoline racing oil..NAPA has it...
