Exclamation HELP! 1970 Eldo - drive shaft boot seal tearing

Remove this ad
Placed a thread in the Eldorado section too, but this seems to be more technical:

The boot seal on the wheel side of the drivers side axle is tearing every time. I replaced it 3 times now. There is no aparent rub or touching that I could see, but there must be something that tears it up. Anyone has an idea?

I replaced the ball joints and the complete axle after the 2nd replacement of the seal and the seal tore again afterall.

The boot seal is installed according to the shop manual instructions...

Please help me out!

Re: HELP! 1970 Eldo - drive shaft boot seal tearing

hello.
have you tryed different manufactors, if there is anymore than one manufactor of the rubber boot?

I was thinking if it is just crappy quality or if it is NOS parts that they are aged bad.

Other than that i don't know.

I mean- it's not like the car has a super tight turningcircle so it stresses out the boot.

You need the most of Holland and a bit of Belgium to turn that thing around ;-)
.

Re: HELP! 1970 Eldo - drive shaft boot seal tearing

First Boot was already on the car in the US. I don't know the manufacturer.
The last one I have looked a little different from the others I had on, so I hope it is better.
All the boots were new, except for the first one that was already on there.

I will try to recover the boot for pictures.

No luck on the recovery so I can't take pictures.
Hope someone will come up with an idea

Re: HELP! 1970 Eldo - drive shaft boot seal tearing

I had this happen to me years ago. The boot has to be burped before the last clamp goes on. You have to squeeze most of the air out. I'd look for the later blue plastic type boots for your car. Those hold up a lot better. I gave up on FWD a long time ago. The B.S. outweighs any advantages when the vehicle gets over about 3500 Lbs.

Re: HELP! 1970 Eldo - drive shaft boot seal tearing

Hmmm, the air in the boot... might be an issue when spinning! Thanks for that tip!
