1980 Eldorado Vacuum Advance VS. 1979 Seville Vacuum advance

I know that all 1979 Eldorados and the 1980 Eldorado produced for California shared the Olds fuel injected 350 with the 1976-1979 (maybe 1980) Seville, however I'm having a hell of a time finding a vacuum advance for a 1980 Eldorado.

I would figure that I could just use one that is listed for a 1979 Seville, however the 1978 Seville has a different part number than the 1979 for the vacuum advance . I thought they were all the same.

Does anyone know if I would be safe using one that is for a 1979 Seville? I'm assuming they don't list one for the 1980 Eldorado, due to the fact that only the 1980 cars with the 350 were California models. Here is the advance in question:

The car has been in a long slumber, and it's time to get it smogged and back on the road. Rock Auto has one for a 1979 Eldorado, but it's a cheapy at $2.56, and I am a firm believer in the "you get what you pay for" department.

    Thanks,
    Dan

Re: 1980 Eldorado Vacuum Advance VS. 1979 Seville Vacuum advance

Is that the correct part number for your advance? I always figured they were pretty much generic nowadays. I can't imagine that they make 100 different advance cans like they did in the 70's. I have never seen one with that plastic elbow on it. They usually have numbers stamped on that flat part near the canister and this one doesn't have any. I think I would take my chances on one from a parts store. I don't think the Seville and Eldo would be that much different.

The parts stores around here would get out their old paper books and look up the exact specs for one if I was real anal about it. I wouldn't be. If I had a real pinger I would look for one with less advance (like from a heavy car-1978Olds98) Since you have to smog it, it would probably be best to "try" to get the correct one if it is still available.

When I was buying vacuum advances, some came with an allen wrench to adjust it for the specific application. The allen tightened or relaxed the tension on the diaphragm within it.

Re: 1980 Eldorado Vacuum Advance VS. 1979 Seville Vacuum advance

Thank you for the help, guys. I ended up ordering a Standard Motor Parts advance for the 1979 Seville off rock auto with a bunch of other parts around a week ago. It was only $10, so I figured I would take the risk. I'm not totally sure that it's the correct one for the car yet or not, however I'm betting it is. If I find otherwise, I'll go ahead and get an adjustable advance and give it a shot. I'm having some misfire issues with the car when accelerating right off idle and I can't quite figure it out. It's causing it to run rich and fail smog.

    Thanks,
    Dan

If you think it is running rich, you might want to check the vacuum line going to the computer and make sure it isn't leaking or kinked somewhere.

If you think a failed vacuum advance will cure a miss off idle, good luck! I presume you tested the advance with a vacuum pump ( MityVac??) before ordering it. This car at this age could have sticky injectors, faulty plug wires or a host of other issues. It has 2 fuel pumps, one in tank one along the frame. What's the fuel pressure? Coolant temp sensors were famous for failing when these cars were a few years old, let alone now! When failed, the engine runs rich. You can swap the air temp sensor for the coolant sensor to test it. (same part number)
