Question Cat. Converter Removal

I will be getting a 87 Brougham from my father soon and was wondering if the cat. converter could be removed when I go to put a new exhaust on it or will it screw up the emission equipment on the car. I want to run duals right behind the rear tires with some nice chrome tips. I am not worried about passing an emission test because I am not required to have on where I live. Also I was thinking about replacing the carb when I get the car anybody have any suggestions on what kind or should I rebuild the old Quadrajet.

Re: Cat. Converter Removal

Hard to beat the Quadrajet in terms of fuel economy and power. Only better would be the Edelbrock copy of the Quadrajet if you want to spend $500.

Removing the CAT will make the car a lot louder especially inside and won't hardly gain any power. If more power is what you're looking for, you're going to need a larger motor.

actually, here in the land of illumina, they do not do any smog tests as of yet. besides, if they do a visual inspection, they will still see the cat. converter body: i gutted it and ran a small strait pipe from the inside.

Re: Cat. Converter Removal

Like I said I'm not worried about passing emissions or a visual inspection sinceI am not required either where I live. Also I have heard that after 50,000 miles the cat can be removed or replaced. I am pushing 160,000 miles now. All I want is a little more power when passing and a little more power taking off from a stop. I am not looking for a hot rod I already have one. I just want a land yatch with some power.

Re: Cat. Converter Removal

I straighpiped my 85 Parisienne. Took the cat and the muffler off in one fell swoop! Oh it got louder, but I'll be damned if it actually got faster. It sounded pretty damn awesome though, once I replaced the q-jet with one of Edelbrock's Performer carbs. the 500 cfm worked great, but that was after it was no longer a computer controlled vehicle. Don't replace the stock q-jet with something else, it's computer controlled. Just my .02.

Re: Cat. Converter Removal

I have 94 eldo w/northstar. I live in Florida and there is no emissions here so I was thinking of removing my cat conv and running straight pipe. I will keep my orig in case I move. I wanted to know if anyone knows how the computer will respond and will the car still run smoothly. If someone knows please email me @ spdy_7@yahoo.com thanks

Re: Cat. Converter Removal

Well, being a '94, you have OBD1, which means no O2 sensor after the cat. You should be alright.
